Some Selected Reports from the POLICE GAZETTE

The substance of all Information received in cases of Felony and Misdemeanours of an aggravated nature, against Receivers of Stolen Goods, reputed Thieves, and Offenders escaped from Custody, with the time, the place, and the circumstance of the Offence. The Names of the Person charged with Offices who are known but not in custody, and a Description of those who are not known, their Appearance, Dress, and other marks of Identity. The Names of Accomplices and Accessories, with every particular which may lead to their Apprehension. A Description, as accurate as possible, of Property that has been stolen, and a minute Description of Stolen Horses for the purpose of tracing and recovering them.
INFORMATIONS.
MURDER and MALICIOUSLY WOUNDING.
About 10 a.m. on the 16th ultimo, the dead body of a female, named MILLISEN DAWES, of Gloucester, was found between the lock gates at the Gloucester Docks, by Vallentine Skidmore, lock-keeper : the skin over the right eye was found sloughed down, and the nose battered in, there were no bruises to be seen, or blood upon her head or dress. On the 30th ultimo an inquest was held upon the body, when the doctor who had made a post-mortem examination, stated that the wounds were inflicted during life, and by some cutting instrument, and the jury returned a verdict of 'Wilful Murder' against some person or persons unknown. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Constabulary Office, Gloucester - Bow-street, November 1.
Description of WILLIAM BUCKINGHAM, of Eynsham, Oxon, labourer, charged with having on the 21st inst., wounded Thomas Savings, with intent to do him some grievous bodily harm : about 34 yrs of age, about 5 feet 7 ins high, thin features, sandy hair and whiskers. Information to be given to Superintendent Cope, Police Station Witney, Oxon, who holds a warrant for his apprehension - Bow-street, October 25.
FORGERY.
Description of WILLIAM COOK, charged at Glasgow with fraudulently obtaining �375 from a bank in Glasgow, on presentation of two forged cheques : he is a musician and billiard marker and player, about 21 years of age, 4 feet 10 inches or 5 feet high, swarthy complexion, black curly hair, which is long behind, dark eyes, has lost two front teeth, smart appearance; dressed when last seen in blue clothes and round felt hat. A sheriff's warrant is granted for his apprehension. Information to be given to Chief Constable McCall, or to Superintendent Brown, Central District Police Office, Glasgow - Bow street, November 1.
BURGLARY and HOUSE BREAKING.
On the night of the 29th ultimo, the house of Elizabeth Ramsey, King-street, South Shields, was entered, and a Purse containing �31 in Gold, and about �9 in Silver, and a pocket Book, containing about 10s in Silver, stolen therein. Information to be given to Chief Constable Richardson, South Shields. - Bow-street, November 1.
HORSE and CATTLE STEALING.
Stolen on the night of the 29th ultimo, from the lands of E. Bate, Esq Kelsterton, near Flint : a black faced Shropshire Down ewe Sheep, marked on the side with pitch 'E.B./K.' and may be marked on the rump with raddle, and is full mouthed. Information to be given to Inspector Hughes, Mold; or to Sergeant Ward, Flint, North Wales - Bow street, November 1.
Stolen from a field at Great Marlow on the night of the 30th ultimo : a bay Cob, 6 years old, 14 1/2 hands high, thin switch-tail; and a dark iron grey Cob, 5 years old, 13 hands high, small lump under saddle each side, and two scissor marks on each off leg. Information to be given to Inspector Breene, Police Station, Great Marlow, Bucks - Bow street, November 1.
Stolen from a meadow at Gatton Corner, in the Borough of Reigate, during the night of the 30th ultimo, a dark brown Mare, aged, just fired behind in both hocks, and lame in the near hind leg, about 15 hands high, with a star on the forehead, the property of Mr. Henry King, of Redhill. Information to be given to Superintendent Rogers, Police Station, Redhill, Surrey. - Bow-street, November 1.
LARCENY and EMBEZZLEMENT.
Description of THOMAS WHEELER, who absconded from London, charged on a warrant with embezzling about �35 worth of Silk, entrusted to him to make up : he is about 54 years of age, 5 feet 4 inches high, thick set, fair complexion, light eyes, and no beard or whiskers; dressed in dark clothes and high hat. Information to be given to Inspector Bailey, City of London Police, Detective Department, 26, Old Jury, E.C. - Bow street, November 1.
WILLIAM WYMAN, alias ELGAR, described in the Police Gazette of the 23rd ultimo, for stealing �54 at Hastings, has been apprehended - Bow street, November 1.
Description of THOMAS CRAVEN, charged at Manchester with embezzling a sum of money on the 21st ultimo : he is about 48 years of age, 5 feet 7 inches high, fresh complexion, mixed grey and sandy hair, whiskers more inclined to grey, full face, and rather stout make; dressed in a yellow mixture tweed suit and billycock hat; by trade a joiner. Information to be given to Chief Constable Torrens, Town Hall, Salford, who holds a warrant for his apprehension - Bow street, November 1.
Stolen from a dwelling-house at Dartford, during the night of the 29th ultimo : a Blanket, a pair of Sheets, two Quilts, two blue Shirts, a silk Handkerchief, with white spots, a black moleskin Jacket, and a pair of Trousers. By a woman, who lodged in the house, about 21 years of age, 5 feet 2 inches high, stout built, and dark brown hair; dressed in old black shawl, old dark skirt, and old black velvet hat; a native of Suffolk. Information to be given to Superintendent Brandon, Police Station, Dartford, Kent. - Bow street, November 1.
Description of a man charged with obtaining by means of false pretences on the 26th ultimo, at Holywell : two pairs of watertight Boots, nailed; two pairs of strong lace-up Boots; two pairs of half wellington Boots; a pair of lady's Boots, cloth lacing up the side; a pair of ditto, leather lacing up the front; and two pairs of leather Leggings. Between 50 and 60 years of age, 5 feet 5 or 6 inches high, dark hair, turning grey, very thin whiskers, and fresh complexion; dressed in a white linen jacket, white trousers, black vest, black billycock hat, and large scarf around neck. FRAUDS and AGGRAVATED MISDEMEANOURS.
Description of a man charged with obtaining �4 10s by false pretences at Altrincham, Cheshire, on the 27th ultimo : about 30 years of age, 5 feet 6 or 7 inches high, rather dark complexion and moustache, no whiskers, dark brown hair; dressed in a long blue frock coat, pepper-and-salt vest, light trousers, black silk hat, white necktie, and had a whip in his hand. Information to be given to Superintendent Steen, Altrincham, Cheshire.- Bow street, November 1.
MISCELLANEOUS INFORMATIONS.
Description of licence-holders who have failed to report themselves at a Metropolitan Police Station, as required by the Penal Servitude Act, 1864.
JOHN HUGHES, No.426, is 62 years of age, 5 feet 11 inches high, fair complexion, grey hair and eyes, prominent nose, scar on forehead, and ruptured on both sides. Was sentenced to seven years penal servitude at Denbigh Sessions for larceny, after previous conviction; his sentence will expire on the 14th March, 1872.
GEORGE BOXALL, No. 8415, 25 years of age, 5 feet 5 1/2 inches high, sallow complexion, brown hair, grey eyes, scars on forehead, anchor on right arm, blue marks on left; was sentenced to 7 years penal servitude at Surrey Sessions for larceny after previous conviction of felony, his sentence will expire 2nd July, 1872.
These licence-holders cannot be found at the addresses given by them, and they are to be apprehended by any constable at any time prior to date of expiration of sentence, and the fact reported immediately to the Commissioner of Police of the Metropolis, London, S.W. - Metropolitan Police, Oct. 23.
EDWARD MEDCALF, a convict, No.5032, has been apprehended, and sentenced to 6 months hard labour, for assaulting Police, at Salford, and at the expiration of his sentence to be sent to Convict Prison, to undergo former period of sentence. Information to be given to Superintendent Williams, Town Hall, Salford - Bow street, November 1.
Escaped from the Essex County Gaol, Springfield, on the morning of the 19th ultimo ; WILLIAM BROOM, then under sentence for larceny, 46 years of age, 5 feet 4 1/2 inches high, fresh complexion, brown hair, dark grey eyes, thin oval visage, light brown moustache, beard shaved off, pockmark centre of forehead, by trade a bricklayer, born at Hammersmith, and has relatives at Ipswich and Stowmarket. His photograph may be seen at the Gaol and Scotland Yard. �2 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as will lead to his apprehension, by Captain McGorrery, Governor of the Gaol. - Bow street, November 1.
PROPERTY STOLEN.
Stolen from a cottage at Malswick, near Newent, on the 8th ultimo : a dark cloth Jacket and Vest; a pair of dark mixture Trousers, with black stripe at the side; a pair of elastic-side Boots, much worn and mended; two old calico Shirts; a red and white silk Handkerchief; a metal albert Chain; two Tobacco Pouches, one folds, the other has a reefing string; and a meerschaum Pipe. Supposed by tramping thieves. Information to be given to Deputy Chief Constable Griffin, Gloucester - Bow street, November 1.
Stolen from the 'Bear' inn, Henley, on the 5th ultimo : a new black velvet Jacket, with outside pockets, since found pledged at Great Marlow, by a man, who lodged at the inn, between 60 and 70 years of age, about 5 feet 6 inches high, very grey hair and whiskers; dressed in a long black coat, dark or black trousers and vest, and high hat; walks with an oak stick, with a hook to it. He left at Henley, a Knife and Fork, two Tea Spoons, and a pair of small Scissors, which are supposed to have been stolen. Stolen on the 30th ultimo from a first class waiting room at Penrith Railway Station : a black sealskin Bag, which can also be used as a lady's muff, containing a lady's white cotton Handkerchief, a bunch of Keys, and a Bill. Information to be given to Superintendent Fowler, Penrith, or to the County Chief Constable's Office, Carlisle - Bow street, November 1.
Stolen from the dwelling-house of a gentleman in Whalley Range, on the night of the 30th ultimo, the following property : a small gold Brooch, yellow diamond in centre, set round with rubies and diamonds; one ditto, set with pearls in form of a knot; two cameo Brooches, set in gold; a lady's short, thick, gold Chain; a gold Chain with serpent, emerald, and diamond eyes; a gold band Bracelet, centre of turquoise and diamonds; a gold Bracelet, snake pattern, head of carbuncle; an opal Ring, with diamonds; and a yellow topaz Ring, set with pearls. �10 reward will be paid to any person who shall give such information as will lead to the conviction of the offender or offenders and recovery of the property, in proportion to the amount recovered. Stolen on the 31st ultimo, from a lodging house in Llanidloes : four yards of striped flannel Shirting, yellow, white, and grey pattern. Supposed by a man and woman, who had been lodging there, the man in about 50 years of age, 5 feet 8 or 9 inches high, grey whiskers, growing under the chin, and of respectable appearance; dressed in a grey overcoat, faded russell cord coat under, brown cloth vest, grey trousers, cossack boots, and low black hat. The woman is about 46 years of age, short, sallow complexion, dark hair and eyes; dressed in a grey cloak, striped half-mourning cotton dress, check apron, and crape bonnet; carried with them some paper parcels. Information to be given at the Chief Constable's Office, Newtown, or to Serjeant Owen, Llanidloes, Montgomeryshire - Bow street, November 1.
Stolen from a shop on the 27th ultimo, the property of Charlotte Jeffery, in the parish of Battle : a youth's morning Coat, blue cloth, double-breasted, four buttons on each side, pockets on the flaps outside, and one inside left breast, new; and a witney cloth Monkey Jacket, velvet collar, and braid on cuffs and collar, fit for a lad about 16 years of age. The jacket was sold at Hastings by a man of the following description : about 22 years of age, 5 feet 7 or 8 inches high, fair complexion, light sandy moustache, no whiskers, and stout make; dressed in a brown overcoat, and round felt hat; had the appearance of a carpenter.
