On or about the 24th of December, 1811, a Hamper (without any direction) containing Copper Tea Kettles, Lanthorn Horns, &c. &c. was brought from the Portsmouth Hoy Public House, Poole, with other Goods directed to me. Enquiry was then made to know by what conveyance it was brought there, but it could never be discovered; numberless enquiries have since been made, to find out from whom they came, for whom intended, but without effect.
The owner may have them, on giving a satisfactory account of the contents of the Hamper, and paying the expences incurred.- If not claimed within one month from the date hereof, the Goods will be sold to pay expences.

Plymouth, April 30.

Royal Clemency.

On Tuesday last, pursuant to orders from the Admiralty, a seaman sentenced to death for striking his superior Officer, was taken from the Salvador del Mundo, flag-ship at Hamoaze, into a boat, attended by the Chaplain, the Rev.C.Birdwood, the Provost Marshall, and a guard of royal marines, the yellow flag being hoisted at the fore of the flag-ship, a signal for punishment, which was answered by the man of war in Hamoaze on board which the punishment was to take place. This boat, attended by all the boats of the fleet, manned and armed, rowed alongside the latter ship. The prisoner was then conducted to the cabin, and spent some time in prayer very fervently with the worthy and attentive Chaplain. Having declared himself ready, the usual procession took place along the gangway to the platform, when the cap being pulled over his eyes, the rope reeved round his neck, and the fatal bow-gun ready to fire, as a signal for launching him into eternity, the Officer on duty ordered the rope to be unreeved, and the cap taken off his face, and then read to him the pardon of his Royal Highness the Prince Regent. The poor fellow, who, we understand, bears a good character, except in this circumstance, was so affected that he fell on his knees directly, and returned thanks to God for the lenity shown to him by the Prince Regent. The name of the prisoner reprieved was Robert Barker, a royal marine of the Hermes, Captain Brown. The crime was committed in Plymouth Sound; he was tried in Cork harbour, and sent to be executed on board the Bittern, in Barnpool.

It may not, perhaps, be generally known, that it is a capital offence to re-issue a forged Banknote, knowing it to be so. A circumstance has lately taken place in this neighbourhood, by which a respectable tradesman has subjected himself to a very unpleasant investigation of his conduct on the part of the Governors of the Bank of England. We do not think that this investigation will be of serious import to the person we have alluded to; but we have given the above information as a caution to some people, who are so foolish as to imagine that they have a right to re-issue a forged note, because they have themselves given value for it.

At the Quarter Sessions, which were held here on Tuesday and part of Wednesday, there was very little business for the gentlemen of the long robe. There were only two traverses tried; the first relative to an assault, which excited no interest, and another respecting the liability of the parish of Rowde to repair a road leading out of the Chippenham road, at a place called Conscience's Lane, past a mill called Cove's Mill, and running into the London road from Devizes from Marlborough, opposite the road to Horton. A great number of witnesses were examined on both sides; those on the part of the Magistrate, Mr.Locke, who had presented the road, to prove that it was a public carriage way; and on the part of the parish, that it was only a public pack-way to Cove's-Mill, but a private road for waggons and carts to the fields adjoining the road. The Jury found a verdict of Guilty, which establishes it to be a public carriage road, and that the parish are bound to repair it.

There were thirteen prisoners, mostly for small offences. Some of the bills were thrown out by the grand jury; but one offender, a thresher, for stealing wheat from his master, was sentenced to be transported for seven years.
