Winchester,
Saturday, October 23.

On Wednesday the Gentlemen, called "the Society of Aliens," instituted for the purpose of apprenticing poor children, held their annual festival in this city. They assembled in the morning at the George Inn, from whence they went in procession to the Cathedral, where an excellent and appropriate sermon was preached by the Rev.G.Heathcote. In the afternoon they went to St.John's House, where more than 100 persons sat down to dinner. The subscriptions amounted to upwards of 153. R. Williams, Esq. and Mr.Lampard were elected Stewards for the ensuing year.

Married. On Monday the 18th inst. at Milford, near Lymington, by the Rev.J.H. Evans, Edward Francis Colston, Esq. of Filkin's Hall, Oxfordshire, to Henrietta, daughter of the late Rob.Davies, Esq. of Farthingville, county of Cork.
Died. On Saturday last, after a very short illness, at Calshot Castle, of which he was Governor, Sir Harry Burrard, Bart. Lieutenant-General in the Army, and Lieutenant-Colonel of the 1st Regiment of Guards.

A few night since a house in Water Lane, near this city, was entered and robbed of a considerable property, by some villains who have hitherto eluded the vigilance of the police. Amongst other articles they stole two feather beds, some sheets, pillows, &c. &c. Their mode of entering the house was quite novel; they did not break it open, but descended into it through the chimney.

Committed to the County Gaol, Lawrence Finnigar, charged with firing a gun at and wounding James Veal, at Spithead.

Andover, Oct.22.

Mrs.Jordan honoured our little theatre last evening, when she played to a crowded house the part of the Widow Cheerly, in the Soldier's Daughter. Amongst the company were noticed almost all the people of fashion both of this town and neighbourhood. To-morrow evening she is to play the character in which her powers are suprereminently conspicuous - that of Violante, in the much-admired comedy of the Wonder !

Newport, Oct.22.

On Saturday the 11th instant, James Potts, master of a passage vessel at Ryde, was convicted in the penalty of 5 on the complaint of Sir John Hippisley, Bart. for demanding double the regulated fare for a passage to Portsmouth, and was also committed to bridewell for grossly abusing the Magistrates in the administration of justice, till he found sureties for his good behaviour. It is to be regretted that complaints of this description so often arise, and are so seldom prosecuted. The Act of the 24th of Geo.2. c.19 empowers the Magistrates to regulate the fares and redress all such abuses; and the masters are obliged under the penalty of 5 to expose to view such tables of regulated fares on their vessels.

Southampton, Oct.22.

On Tuesday evening an inquest was held on the body of Charles Higgens, aged 74 years, who was found dead in his bed on the morning of that day. It appeared in evidence that the deceased had been perfectly well, and spent the preceding evening at a friend's house, and seemed perfectly cheerful. Verdict, Found dead.

We are happy to state, that by the humane exertions of the worthy Rector of St.Mary, a considerable sum has been raised for Sarah Howell, the widow of the late William Howell, who a short time accidentally lost his life by falling from a ladder. The poor woman is blind, and left with a family. The money will either be laid out in an annuity, or be invested in the funds, in the names of a trustee, for the benefit of her and her children.

On Wednesday evening The Widow of Malabar was performed at our theatre, for the benefit of Mrs.Elliott. The piece was well got up, but in consequence of the bad state of the weather, the house was thinly attended.
