About seventy gentlemen sat down to dinner at St.John's House, and partook of venison, game, good wines, and every delicacy in season. Southampton.

Saturday, September 15.

Joseph Lomer, Esq. was yesterday elected Mayor of this town for the ensuing year. A most sumptuous dinner was provided at the Audit House on the occasion, by Mr.J.Webb, consisting of two fine bucks and every delicacy in season. Between 40 and 50 gentlemen sat down to dinner, amongst whom were the Very Rev. the Dean of Salisbury, Sturges Bourne, Esq. M.P., A.R.Dottin, Esq. M.P.; together with the Magistrates and many other gentlemen of the first respectability.

Cricket.- On Monday last a match of cricket, which excited considerable interest from the very superior science evinced by the players, took place on our Marsh, between eleven gentlemen of Lyndhurst and eleven of this town. The match was severely contested, and not decided until Wednesday morning, when the gentlemen of Lyndhurst beat our townsmen with two wickets to go down. An accident happened on the second day to Mr.Neal of Lyndhurst, who, in catching the ball, had one of his fingers broken, notwithstanding which he finished the game. A harder contest than the above is not in the annals of cricket history. The bowling and fielding on both sides were so excellent, that sometimes a single run could scarcely be effected in a quarter of an hour. A remarkably clever catch was , in the course of the play, made by Mr.Pooley, of Lyndhurst, from the bat of Jones, of Southampton, one of the best players in the county.

The following is a statement of the game :-

Salisbury.

Monday, September 17.

Wilton St.Giles Great Sheep Fair was held on Wednesday last, when the number of Sheep and Lambs amounted to 90,000 and upwards, being 20,000 more than were penned last year and the greatest number ever known there. The weather was very unfavourable during the fair. In the early part of the morning sales were briskly effected, and prices of 2s per head were given more than last year. Wethers generally sold from 20s to 32s; Mr.Portman's wethers fetched 2 per head; Ewes 14s to 21s; and Lambs from 8s to 16s per head. The show of Rams was very good, but there was not that number or variety exhibited as on some former years. The Messrs.Mills's stock certainly claimed the attention of many, and particularly a ram of Mr.James Mills, of Tidworth. The ewes of Mr.Mills, of Bistern, and those belonging to the late Mr.Graily, of Alton, obtained higher terms, of about 24s per head. The lambs of Mr.Brewer, of Wallop, and of Mr.Waters, of Castle Stratford, fetched as high prices as 24s per head. There was a large show of Horses, but they met with a very dull sale.

Suicide of a Clergyman

On Saturday the 8th inst., the Rev.Mr.Hewitson, the clergyman of Stour-Pain, near Blandford, put an end to his existence. A Coroner's inquest was held on the body on Saturday evening, when a most horrid spectacle presented itself. The intestines appeared much swollen, and a hole about the size of the muzzle of a musket, appeared on the left side, near the heart. A young gentleman who had been on a visit for some time past to Mr.Hewitson, of the name of Wake, deposed that about ten o'clock on Friday night he observed him, in a distressed and distracted state of mind, take up a gun and leave the house. At Mrs.Hewitson's entreaty he followed him across the road to a field; climbing up a bank, he saw Mr.H stoop down by some railings, and immediately after heard the discharge of a gun; deceased then shrieked violently, and fell down. Mrs.Hewitson, and a number of other persons, came to the spot, and they carried the deceased to the house. Before this, Mr.Hewitson had been ill; his mind was much agitated and greatly distressed. The gun was produced; it had a handkerchief tied to the trigger. Mr.Wake then described the position in which it was placed. The handkerchief had been tied to a rail and the muzzle of the gun placed against his breast, as it was drawn towards the deceased the trigger was pulled, and the contents entered the body. Mr.Salter, the surgeon, said, that he had lately attended the deceased in a fit of illness; his complaint occasioned spasms, which contracted the stomach and chest, and indeed, all parts of the body. He was of the opinion that the illness had injured his intellect and occasioned a morbid irritability of the whole system. A verdict of insanity was recorded. The deceased was a gentleman of Irish extraction, and was in embarrassed circumstances. His age was 64 years.

Mr.Whitmarsh held an inquest at Farley on Friday the 14th inst. on the body of John Williams, who was found dead in his bed; he was far advanced in years, and had been for a considerable time ailing and infirm. No marks of violence appearing on the body, the Jury returned a verdict, "Died by the Visitation of God." - The same coroner held an inquest, a few days previous, at Berwick St.James, on the body of Betty Gilbert, who was found dead in her bed by her husband when he awoke in the morning; the deceased had been at work the preceding day, and retired to bed as well as usual : the Jury returned a verdict as above.

George Howarth, the notorious Frome burglar, (who was a few days since apprehended while concealed in his brother Peter's house at Mobberley, in Cheshire, nearly 200 miles from Frome) underwent an examination on Thursday last, before the Magistrates at Frome, who committed him to Ilchester gaol on several capital charges.

At a petty session held in Devizes on Tuesday, three brothers, the eldest apparently not more than 12 years of age, named William, Charles, and Isaac Raymond, were charged with trespassing, and gathering nuts in the woods in the parish of Urchfont. It appeared that the woodman had no sooner driven them from one coppice than they trespassed on another. William, the elder, who had already been imprisoned for theft, was committed to the House of Correction for two months; and Charles and Isaac each for 14 days.

Committed to Fisherton Gaol:- Isaac Cole and Thomas Whatley, of Wilton, labourers, in default of paying costs to which they were adjudged, for having stolen a quantity of apples from the orchard of William Thring, at South Newton.
