Some Selected Reports from The Windsor and Eton Express

11th November 1837

Princess Augusta

The birthday of this royal princess was on Wednesday last, and in honour of the day the bells of our church were merrily rang and cannon repeatedly fired off in the Bachelor's Acre during the day. A public dinner on the occasion took place at the Adelaide Hotel, Mr.J.Roberts in the chair. The number of guests were very limited, but the repast was abundant, consisting of every delicacy of the season, and was served up in the best possible style. There was also a public dinner in honour of the day at the Hope Inn, Frogmore, and a display of fireworks there in the evening.

Uxbridge, November 10.
Uxbridge Union

Mr.Mitchiner, the auditor, attended at the Public Rooms, on the 25th ult., to audit the union accounts, by which it appeared that the average savings on the years expenditure was 56 per cent, while the poor had been better provided for than under the old system. The Union appears to be very fortunate in its selection of our officers. The chairman, William Saltonstall Wiseman, baronet, by his gentlemanly demeanour and attention to the business, has conciliated all parties and obtained their confidence. The Vice-chairman, the Rev.John Addison, is an active and intelligent supporter of the Poor Law Amendment Bill. The majority of the Guardians are talented men of business. The Clerk, Mr.Woodbridge, is a solicitor of eminence and respectability, and the individual, before all others, to whom the Union is indebted for its admirable working; and the Relieving-officer, Mr.Stockwell, is very humane, and ever attentive to the wants of the poor.

It is almost...
