14th October 1837

Chertsey, October 13.

Our town was lit up for the first time this evening, much to the delight and general satisfaction of the inhabitants, the greater part of whom have, or intend to introduce it, into their houses and shops.

Robbery

Between Saturday night and Monday morning last, three sets of taps and dies were stolen from the Smith's shop, at Brooklands, Weybridge, on the London and Southampton Railway; a reward of ten pounds has been offered on conviction of the offender or offenders.

Depredation

A second attack was made on the new gas lamps of the town of Chertsey, on Monday night last, when five of the iron frames were broken off, in the same manner as before; we should think this will open the eyes of our townspeople to the necessity of establishing a night watch; the town has never been lighted, watched, or regularly paved, but we hope soon to see these desirable improvements taken place.

Annual Ploughing Match

On Thursday the annual meeting of the Chertsey Agricultural Association took place, when rewards were bestowed on the best ploughman, as well as on various farming servants, whose general good conduct were deserving of them.
