Some Selected Reports from The Windsor and Eton Express
15th September 1827
Windsor and Eton
The inhabitants of this town and neighbourhood will, we think, regret with ourselves, that the mighty fund of entertainment, the theatre, has closed its doors for the season. The last week it has been opened every night, and, being devoted to bespeaks and benefits, attracted crowded houses. Patronage has been most deservedly bestowed in the instances of Miss Henry, Mr. and Master Webster, and Mrs.Booth, whose respective talents have shone conspicuous , and been daily appreciated. We need hardly mention that Mr.Penley, whose labours have been so successfully employed in laying out rich tables for his invited guests, was, to the full, rewarded in as large a bumper as the house could afford him. Mr.Younge, the follower of the tragic, and Mr.Burton, of the comic muse, have, by their high qualities, received a hearty welcome when they have appeared on the boards; and have borne away with them wishes of success from every one. Several of the principal performers are on the eve of migration to Norwich, where they are engaged, by Mr.Sloman, during the festival.
On Monday last, Thomas Henry Read, charged with stealing some cloth from Mr.Cook's, tailor, of High-street, Windsor, was finally examined at the Town Hall, and committed to the borough gaol, to take his trial at the ensuing quarter sessions.
On Tuesday last, at Newbury, a writ of inquiry took place before John Roberts, Esq., deputy sheriff of Berks, in which Captain Hall, of Reading, was plaintiff, and Mr.Blandy and Mr.Drysdale, proprietors of the Berkshire Chronicle, were defendants. The action was for a libel upon the plaintiff's character, in a paragraph and pretended advertisement in the defendants newspaper. The former imputed to him the appropriation of a sovereign, which had been given by a gentleman who sustained an injury by the upsetting of a stage coach in the town of Reading, to the poor of the parish, instead of the individuals who had in person rendered assistance in the streets; and the latter contained some libellous reference to the part which Captain Hall had taken in the proceedings connected with the last election for the borough, and some reflections on his conduct while formerly in the military service. The counsel for the defendants, in mitigation of damages, disclaimed , in the most unequivocal manner, that the defendants had intended to cast the slightest aspersion upon the plaintiff's honour, and were ready to give the latter the fullest assurance of such being their real feeling. In fact, they had taken, after publication , the most prompt means of apologizing to Captain Hall for the paragraph which had appeared, and concluding that one farthing damages in this cause would cost Mr.Blandy 300. Verdict for the plaintiff, damages 5.
On Sunday night last, at six o'clock, Charles Dormer, Thomas Bryant, William Bryant, Robert Smith, James Slaughter, Joseph White, and James Aris, effected their escape from Reading gaol in the following manner :- They removed the benches in their day ward, which are affixed to the wall by strong bearers, and by placing them on top of the roof of the privy; they were enabled to reach the coping of the external wall, and by the aid of a broom and mop tied together with their handkerchiefs, they lowered themselves down and escaped into the King's meadow, and were making for the Oxfordshire side of the river, when, the alarm being given. Mr.Ferry , the deputy gaoler, his son, the turnkeys, and some of the neighbours, soon succeeded in recapturing six of them, at the moment they got to the bridge. Dormer, the seventh man, had crossed the river, and all trace of him was lost, till Monday morning, at nine o'clock, he was apprehended at Winkfield, on his road to London. They all escaped in the gaol dress of brown and yellow, without shoes, and wore their shirts outside to appear like smockfrocks. Dormer is a most desperate character, and only returned from transportation two months since, having been ten years at Botany Bay.
Aylesbury
Another fatal termination to a pugilistic contest has occurred, at Wiggington near Tring. A man of the name of Kendal, a shoemaker , at Tring, and another, named Olliffe, a labourer at Wiggington, having quarrelled during the feast at Wiggington on Tuesday, proceeded to settle their dispute by blows. After several rounds, which seemed to be entirely in favour of Olliffe, Kendal struck him a severe blow on the side of the head, which felled him to the ground in a state on insensibility, and he never spoke afterwards. An inquest was held on the body of Olliffe , on Thursday, when it appeared from the evidence of the surgeon who opened it, that his death was caused by the rupture of a blood vessel in the side, and a verdict of Manslaughter was returned by the Jury against Kendal, and the seconds of himself and the deceased. Kendal has been committed to Hertford gaol; and the seconds are out on bail.
It is with great pleasure we announce that J.B.Praed, Esq., and W.S.Lowndes, Esq., have accepted the office of stewards of Newport Pagnel Races, 1828.
Mr.Jackman's company of comedians are performing at Bedford. Miss Booth and Johnston have been performing with them, and have drawn crowded houses. Mr.Jackman's company is to visit Aylesbury in October, for a few weeks. We think that it would answer Mr.Jackman's purpose were he to engage some one or more of the London stars during his stay in this town.
On the night of Sunday last, some thieves killed and took away a fine fat sheep, from the premises of Joseph Kitelee, Esq., at Castlethorpe, near Stony Stratford, which was to have been shown at the annual meeting of the Northamptonshire Farming and Grazing Society.
On the 8th inst., an inquisition was taken by J.Charsley, Esq., Coroner for Bucks, at Chepping Wycombe, on view of the body of Jesse Coles, a traveller, who had got upon the shafts of a waggon whilst in a state of intoxication and fell off, when the wheels passed over his body and head, and so fractured his skull, that he died immediately, Verdict - Accidental Death, and a Deodand of 4s.
On the 13th inst, another inquisition was taken by the same Coroner, on view of the body of an infant child, named Sarah Oldway, at Slough, who was suffocated by the bed clothes, by its turning in the bed, in the absence of the mother. Verdict - Accidental Death.
