17th December 1836

Maidenhead, Dec. 16.

A very respectable meeting of gentlemen of Cookham, Maidenhead, and the vircinity, interested in the promotion of the proposed new Bridge over the Thames at Cookham, took place on Monday last at the King's Arms Inn, Cookham, to consider the best means of furthering this much desired object. Sir G.Young, Bart., took the chair, when several resolutions were passed, and a Committee appointed to expedite the completion of the arrangements. There is no doubt but this undertaking will not only add greatly to the convenience of the public by the additional facility for traffic to Wooburn, Wycombe, &c., but the value of property on both sides of the river will be materially improved, by the substitution of a commodious bridge, for the present inconvenient and sometimes impracticable ferry, which on the occasion of high floods is not only dangerous but impassable. It was pleasing to see the unanimity of the meeting, there not being one dissentient to any of the propositions.

On Tuesday William Nicholls and his wife Ann Nicholls, were fully committed for trial at the Reading Sessions, for stealing some bed linen, &c., from Mr.Lloyd, with whom they lodged.

On Wednesday last James Spokes was brought before the magistrates of this borough, for an assault on Mr.J.Clark, the landlord of the Red Lion Inn, and committed for one month to hard labour at Reading. The larder of the worthy landlord of the above Inn was broken into a few days ago by some person or persons, and a large ham and other things taken therefrom; they no doubt would have helped themselves to more largely, but being disturbed by the ostler, who hearing a noise was proceeding towards the spot, they effected a hasty retreat.

Great Marlow, Dec 16.

An election for a sexton in the room of Harding, lately deceased, took place at Great Marlow on Thursday last. The candidates were William Truss, proposed by Mr.W.Tyler, and a nephew of the deceased, proposed by Mr.Owen Wethered. Truss was elected on a majority of 160 to 34 votes. A few days later, the opulent brewer of the town meeting Mr.Tyler in the street, voluntarily declared to him that he had used no undue influence during that election ! The influence is obvious as the result.

Fatal Accident

Mr.George Hatch, of the Hare and Hounds, Cookham Dean, in endeavouring to pull a tree down with a short rope of Saturday last, received such a severe injury by the sudden falling of the tree upon him, that he survived only till the following day. He has left a disconsolate widow and numerous family of small children to lament his loss.

Dorking, Dec 16.

On Saturday last as Inquest was held at the Workhouse in this town, before H. Woods, Esq., Coroner, on the body of man named Tilley. It appeared that the deceased , who was a carter in the employ of Mr.Ansell, of Mill House Farm, while driving a cart laden with flints, being at the time intoxicated, fell down near one of the wheels, which passed over his head and killed him on the spot. - Verdict "Accidental death."

Farnham, Dec 16.

Farnham Auxiliary Bible Society

The anniversary meeting of the above society was held on Tuesday, the Lord Bishop of Winchester in the chair. The Rev.Andrew Brandram attended from the Parent Society.

This day the marriage jubilee of M.P.Penfold, Esq., who is now in the 82nd year of his age and his partner in her 83rd, was celebrated.

Horse Stealing

Within the last few days several horses have been stolen in Bucks. Two were stolen from a farmer named Burnham, of Aston Abbots. The thief turns out to be a relative; he was taken at Luton toll gate, with one of the horses in his possession. The other one was found at Stoke Hammond, where the man had sold it. A pony was stolen from the paddock of J.Lucas, Esq., of Rowsham, a few days back.
