Some Selected Reports from The Windsor and Eton Express

1st March 1834

A man named Cherril received a severe injury on the head by the fall of a brick, while at work at the Castle on Wednesday last. - Another man named Northcroft had his lower jaw fractured on both sides, while fighting on Saturday last, and what is remarkable he fought four rounds after the accident. In both cases assistance was rendered by the Dispensary.

On Thursday evening, as Mr. Peer was proceeding with his coach from his booking-office to the stables in Sheet-street, the horses (in consequence of the pole breaking in turning) became unmanageable and the near wheeler commenced kicking most furiously ; we are pleased, however, to say, that the breaking of the pole and some trifling damage to the front boot was the extent of the mischief.

The Bath stone masons employed at the Castle struck for an advance of wages on Monday last; and on Wednesday several workmen, employed also at the Castle, were discharged for absenting themselves from their work without leave on the previous day to attend the funeral of one of the members of the "Trades union," consequently some portion of the work at present is at a stand still, and the now unemployed men are seen walking the streets.

In consequence of several of the Trades Unions - carpenters, bricklayers, and others - having struck for wages, the parish officers of different districts have announced their determination to refuse to relieve any one who has either struck for wages or belongs to a Union.
