Some Selected Reports from The Windsor and Eton Express

21st September 1827

This is to give Notice, if John Stanton does not fetch away the things he left at my house, in April last, within fourteen days from the date hereof, they will be sold without further notice.

Charles Thorpe, 49, High Street, Windsor, September 8.

Windsor and Eton

On Wednesday last, Mr.John Woodwell, of Bray, killed, at a single shot, from a quickset hedge, 88 sparrows; and from the great number of wounded, which escaped in every direction, with many that fell in the hedge that could not be found, it may be fairly presumed that more than 100 birds were killed.

On Tuesday last a match of cricket was played at Maidenhead, between Messrs.Jardine, of the Islington Albion, and Marylebone Clubs, and Mr.John Benbow, of the town of Maidenhead, against Messrs. Henry and John Higgs, of the Maidenhead Senior Club; which, after a well contested game, was decided in favour of the latter gentlemen.

Aylesbury

Seven men of the names of James Miller, William Codgell, Henry King, William Reading, Wm.Fowler, William Ringsell, and Wm.Kingston, were brought to the county gaol from Chesham, on Monday evening, having been committed by R.Ward, Esq., for three weeks on a charge of assaulting the keeper of the workhouse, of which they were inmates. Their arrival was very opportune; for in consequence of there being but a small number of persons in the gaol sentenced to the discipline of the tread-wheel, it was difficult before they came to keep it going. At the present moment too there is a full demand for all the work that can be done in the grinding department, the flour mills in this neighbourhood being obliged to stand still for want of water.

A gelding of a rusty-bay colour, four years old, the property of Mr.Phillips of Wendover, was stolen from a meadow at the World's-end, on the night of Sunday last. Mr.Phillips has offered a reward of ten guineas for information that shall lead to the conviction of the thief.

The leases of five public-houses, which were offered by Messrs. Creed and Griffin, last week, viz., the Lion, at Nash Mill; Leather Bottle, at Leverstock Green; Queen's Head, at Corner Hall; Half Moon, at Hemel Hemptead; and Bull's Head, Market Street; the old rents of which up to the time of sale were 106 per annum (together), were let at 450 per annum for the unexpired term of the leases, which is about eight years, and 280 to be laid out in repairs within 12 months, and kept in repair until the leases expire.

During a prayer-meeting held in the Methodists chapel, Buckingham, on Wednesday se'nnight, some mischievous individual unmindful both of law and Gospel, threw a stone half a pound in weight through the window of the chapel. Luckily no one was injured in the body, although, in consequence of the stone passing pretty near to some of the congregation, their minds were somewhat affected by terror; the fright so operated on a poor inoffensive tailor, that, forgetting both the place and the cause which had brought him to it, he involuntarily jumped from his knees and exclaimed, "Oh, d--n it." A reward of one guinea has been offered for the discovery of the idle fellow who threw the stone.

On Saturday last, an inquest was held at the Wheat Sheaf, at Maids-Moreton, near Buckingham, on the body of Robert Siddall, a young man about 22 years of age, who during the night of Thursday the 13th instant, committed suicide in a rickyard belonging to the Rev.Mr.Long. It appeared in evidence that the unhappy man was discharged from the service of the Rev.Mr.Long, of Lillingstone Lovell, on the preceding Wednesday, together with two female servants; and that he enlisted the next day for a soldier, but being too short, was rejected. This rejection, joined to his dismissal from service under circumstances which left a stain on his character, it is supposed, preyed so powerfully on his mind, as to induce him to resort to self destruction. For this purpose he purchased a large pocket knife from Buckingham, which was sharpened to a very keen edge, at his request, previous to his buying it. On the same day he avowed an intention to destroy himself to one of the females, desiring her to receive his money, "as he should have no further occasion for it in this world;" he also requested her to leave him lest he should murder her in his frenzy. The girl, unfortunately, did not think he ment to execute his threat of self-destruction, and therefore, took no means of prevention. Siddall then went to the Wheat Sheaf, and called for a rum; a small quantity was served to him, which he mixed and drank without speaking; his manner was so singular as to cause the Mrs.Griffin, the landlady, to watch him from her house, and she saw him go in the direction of the rickyard where his body was found on Friday, by two Lads who were driving pigs from the corn-stacks; (please email me for details of this case). The deceased was a native of Stowe-in-the-Marsh, Gloucestershire. The verdict returned was, that the unfortunate man committed the fatal act when in a state of Lunacy.

On the same day an inquest was held on the body of Mr.Parker, of the Leather Bottle, at Thornborough, who was discovered dead in the privy of his own house. The deceased had been unwell for some time, but had somewhat recovered, and had requested his medical attendant to discontinue his visits of the very morning he was found a corpse. Verdict - Died by the visitation of God.

A rick of wheat, belonging to Mr.Lennell, farmer, of Fenny Stratford, suddenly burst into flames on the night of Thursday se'nnight about eight or nine o'clock, and although assistance was promptly afforded, the fire was not got under until the rick in which it originated, another rick of wheat contiguous to it, a three-bay barn, in which grain was stored, and a granary, were all destroyed. The dwelling-house of Mr.Lennell was only saved from the conflagration by the most strenuous exertion. The stock and premises are said to be insured for 4,000. It is supposed that the rick was wilfully set on fire.

It appears by a printed handbill, signed by Messrs.Bayne and Mr.Wise, surgeons, the Rev.Y.Fosbrooke, curate, and Wm.Arne, assistant overseer, of Banbury "that not a single case of small pox remains in the borough of Banbury."

An Adjourned Sessions was held on Thursday, for auditing the County Accounts, at which were present - Sir.J.D.King, Bart., Sir.T.F.Fremantle, Bart., Col.Browne, J.Grubb, Esq., Rev.Mr.Finch, Rev.Mr.Archer, Rev.Mr.Ashfield, and the Rev.Mr.Lockhart. We understand the expenditure is considerably less than in the preceding years accounts, but there was not time for us to obtain the abstract for publication when our paper went to press.

On Tuesday last a fine woodcock was killed by Mr.James How, of Chesham, in his own wood at Bovingdon, Herts, which is considered unusually early in the season.

In Wednesday, the 12th instant, an inquisition was taken at Biggleswade, before Mr.Times, coroner for the county of Bedford, on view of the body of Mr.John Rootham, butcher of that town, who on Wednesday night previous went to bed in his usual state of health, but was about a quarter before eleven o'clock seized with a fit of apoplexy, which occasioned his almost instantaneous death. Verdict accordingly.
