Some Selected Reports from The Windsor and Eton Express

24th December 1836

Egham, Dec 23.

On Wednesday a young man, named Hancock, was taken before T.R.Ward, Esq., charged with stealing two shawls from the shop door of Mr.Long, linen-draper of this town. The shawls, it appeared , had been stolen by the prisoner from the shop door of Mr.Long, and that he carried them home and told his father how he had obtained them. His father desired him to go and sell them, but instead of doing so he went to Windsor and pledged them. A female who knew of the robbery and the disposal of property, gave information, which caused the prisoner to be taken into custody, and the shawls were obtained from the pawnbroker at Windsor. The Magistrate fully committed the prisoner for trial.

It appears to be at length determined to light this town with gas, which will prove a very beneficial improvement.

Chertsey, Dec 23.

A charity sermon was preached on Sunday last at our church, by the Rev.J.H.Stephenson, for supplying the poor with coals, when the sum of 47 10s was collected.
