Egham, Nov 25

On Sunday last a sermon was preached in this church, by the Rev.Thomas Page, in aid of the funds of the Incorporated Society for the Building and Enlargement of Churches, &c. The congregation was large - happy should we be to say the same of the collection, which, however, amounted only to the trifling sum of seventeen pounds and a few odd shillings. In the neighbouring small village of Thorpe, the collection, for the same object, was nearly equal, though contributed by a congregation representing not a tithe of the wealth possessed by that assembled at Egham church. As the appeal made by the Minister was both in matter and manner all that the most zealous patron of the Society could desire, we are at a loss to account for the slight response which it appears to have found in the breasts of the hearers, unless, in charity, we attribute it to the article which, during the preceding week, appeared in The Times, pointing out a mal-administration of the Society's funds, by the appropriation of a portion to the erection of a residence for the Bishop of Gloucester and Bristol, which statement, put forth with all the appearance of truth, and remained uncontradicted, may probably, have operated unfavourably for the object of the Sermon, by inducing many to withhold their contributions from a fund, a portion of which had apparently been thus disgracefully misapplied.

On Wednesday morning last, about two o'clock, the alarm of fire was given in the town of Egham, which, on inquiry, was found to proceed from the inmates of the house of Mr.Andrews, the baker. It appears that the embers had been taken out of the oven on the preceding day, and deposited in the usual place; a brick in the floor having, however, by some means been displaced, a portion of the embers fell into the hollow, and eventually ignited one of the uprights of the bakehouse, extending also to the rafters, the crackling and noise attending the burning of which awoke Mrs.Andrews, who immediately gave an alarm, by which, prompt assistance being procured , the fire was extinguished without extending its ravages beyond the bakehouse. The loss, which is comparatively trifling, is fully covered by the insurance.
