Yesterday the tradesmen of Colonel Vyse dined together at the Red Lion, Stoke, to celebrate the return of that gentleman from Egypt, where he has been for some time prosecuting his researches into matters of antiquity.




High Wycombe, December 8.

It is contemplated to warm and light our church with gas, which we understand will cost about �150 to �200. Subscriptions have been liberally commenced.

Died, suddenly, at Mrs.Britton's, High-street, in this town on Saturday last, Mrs.Elizabeth Stevens, of Chesham. Deceased was the niece of Mrs.Britton, who was then dangerously ill, and on whom she was attending. On Friday night she went to bed by the side of Mrs.Britton, apparently in perfect health, and in the morning was found a corpse.

Wesleyan Missionary Society

The Fourth Anniversary of the Maidenhead branch of this Society was held on Tuesday evening in the Town Hall, the use of which was granted by the Mayor for the occasion, when a very crowded audience was addressed by Kahkewaquonaby, a converted Indian Chief, whose interesting statements relative to the improved condition of his degraded fellow-countrymen, and the rapid dissemination of the Christian Religion among them , were received with loud acclamations of applause ; and the marked attention, as well as the evident delight which was depicted on every countenance, together with the liberal collection which was made, plainly evinced the great interest which was felt in this important branch of the labours of this society. The report, which was read by the Rev.G.Jackson, of Windsor, states, that the enormous sum of �75,000 was raised last year by this society, of which �102 was collected in the Windsor circuit, which includes Maidenhead. The chair was taken by Captain Phillips, of Hounslow. The meeting was further addressed by the Rev. Edward Greenwood (president of the Wesleyan conference), Rev.W.Beal, of London, Rev.W.Box, late a missionary in the West Indies, and the .....
