Windsor and Eton

On Monday last the Corporation of Windsor met at the Town Hall, for the election of a Mayor and other officers of the Borough, for the ensuing year. After attending divine service at the parish church, Mr.John Voules was elected Mayor, J.Clode, Esq., Justice, and Mr.John Secker and Mr.Charles Layton, Bailiffs. A sumptuous dinner was given on the occasion, by our present worthy chief magistrate, at the Town Hall. The dessert and wines were of the finest quality.

On Wednesday evening the Lord Bishop of Salisbury arrived at the Castle, where apartments had been provided for his lordship in Salisbury Tower. At eleven o'clock the following morning his lordship proceeded to the parish church, and performed the impressive ceremony of confirmation upon upwards of 400 persons. Archdeacon Fisher and several clergymen from the neighbourhood were present.

The names of our highly respected members, J.Ramsbottom, Esq., and Sir R.H.Vivian, drew a most numerous and elegant audience to the Theatre on Tuesday evening, when Paul Pry made his last intrusion for the season; the inquires of this gentlemen were succeeded by the farce of Raising the Wind, which bore off its usual share of laughter and applause. The melodrama of the Miller and his Men has been submitted to the public in a most creditable manner, and appeared to afford general satisfaction, but we must reserve our chief meed of praise for the very efficient manner in which the popular drama of the Pilot has been brought forward. We did not conceive it possible that so much scenic effect could have been produced on so small a stage. The part of the Pilot was ably performed by Mr.Younge, as was that of the Lieutenant by Mr.Mercer, and making allowance for a little high colouring, perhaps necessary to the character, Mr.Weimer[?] turned out a "pretty considerably genuine Yankee," Long Tom Coffin stood forth the favourite of the night, and was very cleverly acted by Mr.M.Penley. We think the manager rather unmindful of his own interest in not having produced the Pilot somewhat earlier in the season, as that comparatively few persons can at present be gratified in witnessing its representation. On Tuesday next the Mayor and Corporation honour the theatre with their patronage; and on the Saturday a variety of [..] entertainment will be given for the benefit of the manager, being the last night of the season.

At the sitting of the magistrates on Thursday, George Hester, baker, of Eton, was held on bail to keep the peace for twelve months, for threatening to shoot Mrs.Lamb, of the Crispin, Thames-street.

On Tuesday a fatal accident occurred at the Cavalry Barracks. A man named Rock, whilst attending his horses in the stable, received a severe kick in the abdomen; he was immediately taken to the hospital, where he lingered in great agony till the following day when he expired. The deceased was about 50 years old, and has been in the regiment as driver to the train waggons for many years.

On Tuesday last, the return match of cricket was played on Uxbridge Common, between the Etonian cricket club and eleven gentlemen of Uxbridge, which was decided in favour of the former in one innings and twenty-three runs; a second game, to be decided in one innings was also played, and was won by the Etonians with three wickets to go down.

William Doe Belcher, Esq., is chosen Mayor of Abingdon, Mr.E.Cheer, the Mayors Bailiff, and Mr.Baker the Commoner's Bailiff.

Thomas Tindal, Clerk to the Trustees,
Aylesbury, Aug 3d, 1826.

Aylesbury

We perceive, by this weeks paper, an addition of several gentlemen's names, as stewards to the dinner intended to be given to the Marquis of Chandos, at Great Marlow, on Wednesday next. We understand a great number of gentlemen in the neighbourhood have signified their intention of attending; indeed, from the very spirited manner in which it has been taken up, little or no doubt can be entertained of having a large party. It must be truly gratifying to the Noble Marquis to see such a number of highly respectable gentlemen taking up the cause, and not less gratifying to the freeholders, to have cause, and not less gratifying to the freeholders, to have a representative whose character and abilities are held in such high estimation. Sir Wm.Clayton, Bart., will fill the chair; and the very high respect in which the worthy Baronet is held will doubtless be an additional inducement for many to attend. Several professional gentlemen are engaged to amuse the company.

Wednesday last was the day fixed for the return match between the Aylesbury and Leighton cricket clubs, but the morning lowered, and the rain fell so heavily, that it was evident that the game must be abandoned for the day. Notwithstanding, however, the unpropitious state of the weather, the Leighton men were true to their appointment, and drove into Aylesbury about 10 o'clock in the morning, but after a conference with their opponents, they came to a decision which the state of the weather and of the ground rendered not only prudent but also unavoidable - namely, to defer the game rine die on account of the near approach of winter. The day was not, however, wholly lost, for the clubs of the two towns dined together at the Bell inn, and passed their time until the evening in the greatest conviviality.

Yesterday a match of cricket was played at Aylesbury between Mr.J.Goode, Mr.C.Ward, and Mr.W.Read, against Mr.Lucas, Mr.W.Perrin, and Mr.W.Ratt, for 3 a side, which was won by the former in a single innings.

As the Rev.Wm.Howard, of Hogstone, accompanied by his lady, was descending the hill at Padbury, on his road to Buckingham, on Wednesday se'nnight, in his gig, the horse fell and cut himself severely. Mr.H, although thrown some distance, was, we are happy to say, not seriously hurt. Mrs.Howard escaped without receiving any injury.

Last week, one of the keepers in Whaddon Chase, fell from a tree, where he had placed himself to shoot deer, and broke his leg. The poor man is, however, likely to do well.

On Monday last a most distressing occurrence took place at the house of a respectable farmer at Little Kimble, Bucks, which became the subject on inquiry on the following day before J.Charsley, Esq., the coroner, who then held an inquisition on the body of Celia White, a single woman aged about 20[?] years - From the evidence adduced it appeared that on Monday the deceased was observed to go ....
