A Howland History

Written for the Descendants of Valentine Mott Howland, Sr; 1914

Bar

NOTE: With few exceptions, the following is in the author's own words...

This addition to the Howland History is written for the descendants of Valentine Mott Howland, Sr. and to correct an error that was made at the time the history was written by Franklyn Howland of the three brothers, Arthur, Henry and John Howland...in regards of my father, that he died leaving no family, and that he died at Covington, Pennsylvania. I wish to correct the error for the benefit of his descendants.

My father, Amos B. Howland, was born at Hamden, Delaware County, New York in 1805. After he finished his schooling he studied medicine and surgery in New York City under old Dr. Valentine Mott, and became an eminent Physician and Surgeon. He was married in 1834 in New York City to Mary Catherine Monks of Belville, Essex County, New Jersey. Mary Catherine's maiden name was Ryerson. She was married first to John Monks of Belville, Essex, New Jersey. To them one son was born by the name of John Monks Jr. John Sr. only lived about three years after his marriage to Mary Ryerson. Mary's father was Edward Ryerson. John Jr. was married and was the father of seven children; four sons and three daughters. One of his sons was a brick and stone mason; one was a silk weaver. John Jr. was living in Belville in 1890, as I received a letter from him about that time. He stated in his letter that he was 65 years old at that time, was living on Cartland Street. Nothing more is know of him or his children by this writer.

Dr. Amos B. Howland moved to Tioga, Tioga County, Pennsylvania in 1852 and settled first at Tioga Village, then Mosherville, where he bought a house. The house stood on the main Road running from Roseville, Tioga County, through Job Corners, Mosherville, Welsville, and through to Almira, New York. Dr. Amos B. Howland had a very large practice. He performed a great many surgical operations in which he was very successful in all of them. He died at old Elder Jewels the 11th day of May 1860. He was buried at Aspinwall Corners May the 13th, 1860. Later I will give the names of his children.

A brief sketch of Henry Howland the first; also a few remarks of Arthur and John Howland. John came over in the Mayflower in the year of 1620, and settled in Plymouth, Massachusetts. Arthur and Henry Howland came over from England in 1625, and also settled. I will not give much time in writing of Arthur and John at the present, but later will give a few of their descendants.

Henry Howland the first married Mary Newland. The date of their marriage is not given in the history (written by Franklyn Howland). Children of Henry and Mary were:

  1. Joseph: died 15 June 1692
  2. Zoeth: died 31 January 1676
  3. John: it is said that he never married
  4. Samuel: died in 1716
  5. Sarrah: died 16 November 1672
  6. Robert Dennis: of Portsmouth, Rhode Island
  7. Elizabeth: married Jedediah Allen in 1691
  8. Mary: married James Cudworth of Duxbury
  9. Abigail: married John Young on 13 Dec 1648

Henry Howland the first and his wife probaably died at the old home in Duxbury...Henry (died) the 17th day 1st month 1671 and his wife, Mary, (died) the 17th day 6th month 1674.

Remarks concerning Henry's early life...the youngest at least the last mentioned in the will of Humphrey of the Howlands who have been heretofor referred to as arriving at Plymouth before 1625 was without doubt Henry Howland. It is on record that he was a brother of Arthur and they all doubtless held the same family relationship to each other. Some of the colonists may have reached greater distinction in civil affairs, but none have a better record for integrity and thriftworthiness, and unwavering faith in the divine one than Henry Howland.

It is clear that these virtues did not die with him but permeated the lives of many of his children and his children's children unto the ninth generation. As we read of his viscissitudes, discouragements, perserverence, endurance, courage and victories let us like our honored ancestor.

In the World's broad field of battle
In the bivouac of life
Be not like dumb driven cattle
But be heroes in the strife.
