The Ancestors Of Thomas East of

Henry County Virginia

John East of Halifax Co VA, was possibly a son of John East (he a son of Thomas East Jr) and Sarah Madox. Either John (the subject of this biography) or his son was living in Lunenburg Co on the Little Roanoke in 1750. There is a 1748 Lunenburg Co land patent (in the part which became Halifax Co in 1752) which "ordered that Abram Shelton, Joseph Payne, John East, Thom Munsten, and Charles Lewis, do procession patented lands from mouth of Stinking River up Banister to mouth of White Thom Creek." John left a will dated 16 January 1758 in Halifax Co, in which he named his wife Jane _____, and two sons. From a 1 August 1772 deed of trust record in Pittsylvania Co, indications are that John may have also had a son named Thomas whom he did not name in his will. The sons named were John and William. These three probable sons were-

1.    John East [E1], b abt 1735

2.    William East [E2]

3.    Thomas East [E4b2] (? born 1730?) (M81,EP,JY,VJ,JA, RC)

John East [E1], son of John East and Jane _____ of Halifax Co VA, was born in Lunenburg Co or in Brunswick Co VA about 1735. On 17 May 1764 he took out a land grant of 400 acres on Stinking River.

Sometime before 16 August 1764 John married Frances _____ (Harston or Hairston? See the biographies of sons Thomas and Joseph.), probably in Halifax Co. On that date John sold 50 acres on Stinking River to Richard Kezee, and Frances was listed as John's wife (Book 5, Page 157-159). She would likely be of a neighboring family since the courting distance of young men of over two centuries ago was quite limited. The 1764 land sale was part of a 340 acre tract he bought on Stinking River in Halifax Co from Thomas Faris on 21 July 1763. John and his family lived on a 300 acre plantation along Panther Creek in Pittsylvania Co where he was a farmer. On 26 June 1777 John East "and Frances, his wife, of Pittsylvania Co" sold 300 acres on Panther Creek, "the plantation on which the said John East now lives," for £190 to Thomas Clark of Amelia. This land was next door to Crispen Shelton, Joshua Hudson, John Payne, and Lightfoot's property.

In 1767 John was listed on John Donelson's tithe list in Pittsylvania Co. There is a 29 March 1770 Pittsylvania Co deed record where a John East bought 400 acres on Straight Stone Creek from William Thomas. John also sold 100 acres on Stinking River to William East on 16 August 1764, and in 1771 sold 190 more Stinking River acres to James Bruce. On 25 May 1772 John East of Pittsylvania Co bought 250 acres on Panther Creek from William Perry. Three days later John bought 35 acres from Hall Hudson and Hall's wife Frances. On 23 May 1775 John East of Pittsylvania Co sold 140 acres on Straight Stone Creek to Francis Luck for £35.

Some indication of the names of his children are in the Pittsylvania Co deed records. There is a 1 August 1772 deed of trust in which John East Sr of Pittsylvania Co is indebted to John Smith of Halifax Co for £48. Witnesses were Thomas East (a brother?, Thomas East [E4b2]?) and Joel Hunt. Very often witnesses to legal transactions were the children who were of legal age or close to it, and in this case John is called John Sr, implying there was a John Jr nearby. And on 21 April 1778 John East of Pittsylvania Co sold 200 acres on Straight Stone Creek to John Fitzpatrick of Bedford Co; witnesses were Francis Luck, Joseph East, and Major Childress.

There is an 11 March 1781 record of John as a soldier in Lanier Company from Henry Co, and there is also a 1782 record of John being paid for providing corn to Revolutionary War Soldiers. In 1787 he was named on a Henry Co Personal Property tax list owning five slaves (two above age 16 and three below 16), five horses, and nine cattle; there was also a white male (indentured servant?) between the ages of 16 and 21. On 18 January 1803 John granted to his son William a Negro boy named Starling; John's wife Frances witnessed this deed. He left an 1803 will in Henry Co which was inventoried on 28 March. (Lunenburg Co was formed from Brunswick Co in 1746, Halifax Co from Lunenburg Co in 1752, Pittsylvania Co from Halifax Co in 1766, and Henry Co was formed from Pittsylvania Co in 1776) Therefore he died in the first quarter of the year. At least two of the children moved west: Joseph moved to KY and Thomas moved to Giles Co TN. The seven known children of John and Frances were-

a.    Mary East was born in the 1764 in Pittsylvania Co VA. She married Joel Pace in Henry Co soon after 20 November 1780 (Henry Co was formed from Pittsylvania Co in 1776) and remained in the area at least until October 1814 when her husband appeared in the Henry Co court concerning the division of the estate of Mary's father, She and Joel moved to central KY, then to Jefferson Co IL by the summer of 1820. (M94,JA,RC).

b.    Thomas East, b 1765, moved to Giles Co TN; see his biography below, in the alphabetical section below.

c.    John East Jr was born in the late 1760s in Pittsylvania Co VA. He died after 1793, but before 28 March 1803 when the inventory of his father's estate was made. A 23 October 1790 petition was signed by John East and his son John East Jr to form Patrick Co out of Henry Co; this establishes that John Jr was age 21 at the time. In the 1793 Henry Co court John Jr was paid to appear and give witness that he did see his father supply corn for the Revolutionary Army in 1782. There is no indication that John had any living children by the time he died. (JA,RC)

d.    Joseph East, was born about 1770 in Pittsylvania Co VA, in the section which became Henry Co in 1777. On 15 June 1795 in Henry Co he married Jane "Jinney" Rea, daughter of James Rea of Henry Co. (See Joseph East [E1b3].) She was born in either Henry Co or in Pittsylvania Co VA. Joseph and Jinney, with four or five of their children, moved to KY about 1800, settling on "Duck River" (Dicks River? in southeast KY?). There is a January 1805 deed of trust to Joseph from George Harston (spelled "Hairston") and Gilbert Rowland in Henry Co; Joseph's brother William was a witness. Perhaps Joseph sold his property in Henry Co after he and his family decided they liked KY. Then about 1820 they moved south to Franklin Co AL where Joseph died in 1832. Jinney gave her son Thomas her power of attorney on 10 November 1835. Jinney also died in Franklin Co. Joseph's children and the children of his brother Thomas East [E1b] visited each other and kept up the family ties for some time, according to Elizabeth Gorman Cross [E1d9d1f], (Mrs William D Brotherton) in 1932. Mrs Brotherton was a great granddaughter of Joseph's son Thomas. Joseph and Jinney had 11 children-

      1.    John East, b abt 1796

      2.    Mary East

      3.    Jane East

      4.    Jemima East

      5.    Joseph East

      6.    Frances East

      7.    James East

      8.    Sarah East

      9.    Thomas East, b 23 Dec 1810

      10.  Robert East

      11.  Elizabeth East (VJ,EP,JA,RC,EE,28z)

e.    Milley East, was born in the 1770s in Pittsylvania Co or in Henry Co VA (Henry Co was formed from Pittsylvania Co in 1776). She married John Mattox before 1800, for in that year John & Milley Mattox and William East testified in court in Henry Co. Also, in an 11 October 1814 court record Milley's mother Frances, and heirs Joel Pace, John Mattox, Joseph East, David Rea and Thomas East were named in matters concerning the division of the estate of the late John East (Book 2, Pages 67, 109, 236, 259). Since John Mattox, David Rea and Joel Pace were named as heirs, this established that they were spouses of the daughters of John and Frances. If Milley and John had any children, it is not known. (M92,RC)

f.    William East, was born in Halifax Co VA on 24 February 1776, in the section of the county which became Henry Co in the following year. He married Elizabeth Thurston on or soon after 26 January 1802 (the marriage bond date) in Henry Co; the surety was David Rea (husband of Frances East, William’s sister). In 1808, William and Elizabeth moved to Middle TN, stayed for a short time, and in 1809 moved on to AL where he patented about 160 acres on 16 November 1810. William lived in Madison Co, and apparently outlived Elizabeth. A Madison Co Newspaper obituary reported the 9 October 1841 death of a "Mrs Sally East consort of William East Esq, long a resident of this county." Sally was born 12 May 1781 and was from Halifax Co VA. The obituary indicated that she may have been the wife who moved with William to TN, then to AL.

William died at home on 21 August 1847 and was buried in the East family cemetery, one mile east of the (1988) McCrary home in Madison Co. Sally was buried in the same graveyard. He had seven children-

      1.    Mary C East, b abt 1802

      2.    Elizabeth H East, b abt 1803

      3.    Yancy Thomas East, b 5 May 1804

      4.    Eliza P East

      5.    Susanna Withers East, b abt 1813

      6.    Priscilla W East, b 11 Sep 1813

      7.    Alexander Hamilton East, b abt 1815 (M89,M92,M94,DJ,VJ, JA,JF,RC)

g.    Frances East, was born in Henry Co VA in 1776 and may be a twin to her brother William. She married David Rea about 22 July 1794 (marriage bond date) in Henry Co. David was born in the 1760s. He left an 1837 Henry Co will, and was dead by 1840. He and Frances had at least four children, and probably more-

      1.    girl Rea, b 1800s

      2.    boy (Renard, b 1799 ?) Rea, b 1800s

      3.    boy (John P, b 1815 ?) Rea, b 1816-1820

      4.    Mildred Rea, b 1816 (90,94,VJ,EP,MT,RC,28jkn)

The East Families Of Giles, Wayne, and

Hardin Counties Tennessee

(In Alphabetical Order)

Arabella M Abernathy [E1b9i], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born in February 1839 in Giles Co TN. She married William R Murray about 1862, probably in Giles Co, and lived there for years afterwards. He was born in TN about 1838, and was a farmer. In 1860 Arabella was living with her mother and two sisters, in 1870 she and her husband lived in Giles Co, but in 1880 they were in Maury Co, in civil district 6 where William was a farmer. In 1900 Arabella was living with her daughter Maggie in Marshall Co, and was an apparent widow then. They had seven children by 1880-

1.    Maggie H Murray, b Oct 1863

2.    Edna M Murray, b 1865

3.    James T Murray, b 1869

4.    Martha Murray, b May 1870

5.    William R Murray, b 31 Jul 1873

6.    Maxine Murray, b 1875

7.    Joseph Murray, b 1877

An apparent adopted son, John Murray, was living in Arabella and William’s home as the eldest son in 1880. Both of John’s parents were born in VA. John was born about 1869 in TN. Or, ... perhaps this John was really James T, since James T was missing in the 1880 census.

In the 1850 census, Arabella’s age was 10; in 1860 she was 19; in the 1870 census, she wasn’t found; and in 1880 she was 42. (EE, EP,10s, 15knqrc)

Edward Littleton Abernathy [E1b9c], the missing son of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born 17 October 1829 (1832 per the 1860 census) in Giles Co TN (Tennessee per 1860 and 1870 censuses), He was in his parents’ 1830 and 1840 household in those censuses, but by 1850 he was gone from home. 1932 research by Mrs Elizabeth East Anderson reported that Mariah East had a son living in MO. And the 1860 and 1870 censuses of MO show two male Abernathy men who fit the Giles Co census records of 1830 and 1840. One was Edward L Abernathy living at Ebenezer (about ten miles north of Springfield) in Green Co, where he was a farmer, and the other was Marcus L Abernathy. See the note following about Marcus. Edward married Nancy Jane Headlee on 6 October 1854 in Greene Co. She was born in TN (per 1860 and 1870 censuses, and in NC per 1850 census) on 25 April 1832, daughter of John Headlee and Mary L Sims. Edward died 23 February 1907 in Greene Co. Afterwards, their son Robert took over the family farm and lived next door to his widowed mother. Nancy died 16 January 1915 in Franklin Twp of cirrhosis of the liver, and was buried with Edward in Mt Comfort Cemetery in Greene Co the next day. Edward and Nancy had three children, all born in Greene Co MO-*

1.    Robert Perkins Abernathy, b 27 Oct 1855 in Greene Co MO, probably lived most of his life in Greene Co. He had not married by 1880; he and his unmarried twin sisters were then living with their parents in Greene Co in Franklin Twp. Robert married Mary Elizabeth Evans on 1 October 1891 in Greene Co. She was born in MO 16 March 1865, daughter of D M Evans from MS and Evelyn Roberson from MO. Robert and Mary lived in Springfield, where he was the county assessor. When his father died, Robert took over the family farm. He died on 9 January 1913 at North Campbell, Greene Co, and Mary died on 22 April 1919 at Springfield. His three children, by 1920, had taken over the running of the family farm. Robert and Mary were buried in Mt Comfort Cemetery about five miles from their home. By 1910 Robert and Mary had four children, three still living, and all born in Greene Co-*

      d.    Bernice Edwina Abernathy, b 16 Apr 1899, was single, and was a farmer in Franklin Twp, Greene Co living on the family farm with her brothers in 1920. She married Elvin B Appleby about 1920 and died at Dallas, TX in March 1973. Elvin was born at Springfield on 23 August 1900, son of William A Appleby and Gertrude E _____. Therer is a death record at Dallas dated 7 September 1970 for Elvin B Appleby Sr, so this is probably Bernice’s husband. Bernice and Elvin had three sons by 1930-*

             1.    William R Appleby, b 1922 in KS. (41f)

             2.    Paul E Appleby, b 1925 in Greene Co MO. (41f)

             3.    Elvin B Appleby, b May 1927 in Greene Co MO. (41f) (RA, Z,TXd41uvwf, 408R)

In 1900, Mary’s cousin Mary M Evans, born October 1879, was living with Robert and his wife Mary. Also, two roomers were living in Robert’s home. (L,RA,41qrsuvd)

2.    Lilly May Abernathy, b 26 Nov 1859, never married. She lived much of her life with her parents in Franklin Twp, Greene Co. She was a music teacher. After both her parents died, Lilly lived with her friend Eleanor Harkness next door to her nephew Horace in Franklin Twp. When Lilly died in April 1934 in Greene Co, she was buried with her parents in Mt Comfort Cemetery about five miles from her parents’ home. (L,RA,41qrsuvwd)

3.    Mary Belle Abernathy, b 26 Nov 1859 in Greene CO MO, grew up there and married Adam Thompson in Greene Co on 24 March 1886. He was an English bloke, an only child, and was born in England in March 1861. He immigrated to the US in 1869 and by 1910 was naturalized. Adam was a fruit farmer, and Mary was a postal clerk. They lived in the west part of Camden Twp, DeKalb Co MO. Adam died in DeKalb Co on 4 January 1937; Mary Belle died there 15 January 1936. By 1910 they had two children, both born in DeKalb Co MO-*

      a.    Mary Emily Thompson, b Jan 1891 (136uv)

      b.    William Edward Thompson, b 14 Apr 1893 at Amity. He married Lola _____ about 1915 and in 1920 they lived at Camden, DeKalb Co. William was then a bank cashier. Lola was born in MO in 1892. (M,136uv)

Adam’s widowed mother Elizabeth was living with Adam and Mary in 1910. When Mary Belle’s father died, Adam Thompson was the informant for the death record information. (L,41qrs,136vd)

The 1850 census of Giles Co shows Edward L Abernathy, age 21, living with Robert G Abernathy, age 50. There were children ranging in ages from 25 to 14 in Robert’s household in 1850, but Edward was listed as the last child, as if he were a nephew. That 1850 Edward was the only Edward Abernathy in TN in 1850 who had the same approximate birth date as the MO Edward in 1870. In 1870, Herman Griffith, an 18 year old farm hand born in IL, was living with Edward and Nancy

Marcus Abernathy was born in 1829 or 1830 in Giles Co TN, The 1870 census of MO shows both Marcus and Edward Abernathy who fit the Giles Co census records of 1830 to 1850. Marcus Abernathy, in 1860, was living at Ebenezer (about ten miles north of Springfield) in Green Co, where he was a store clerk. This is the same area where Edward Abernathy was living. Marcus married Nancy Jane _____ about 1855. She was born in MO about 1840. They had seven children by 1870, all born in MO: William A Abernathy, born 1855; Mary M Abernathy, born 1856; Ophelia M Abernathy, born 1858; Fanny Abernathy, born 1861; Ida Abernathy, born in 1864; Cora Abernathy, born 1867; Frank Abernathy, born 1869. The 1850 census of Giles Co shows Marcus L Abernathy, age 20, living with Matilda Abernathy, age 42. This Matilda appears to be his mother; there were children ranging in ages from 21 to 6 in her household in 1850. That 1850 Marcus was the only Marcus Abernathy in TN in 1850. If Matilda was his mother as the census indicates, then she was likely a sister-in-law of Mariah East who married Wilkins Abernathy. And Marcus therefore would have been a first cousin to Edward Abernathy who went with Marcus to MO when they were young men. In 1860 in Greene Co there were two teenage Sing children living with Marcus and Nancy: Mary, age 17, and Bennet, age 15. Both were born in MO. (EE,L, 15jkn,41nqruvwd)

Elizabeth Abernathy [E1b9g], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born in 1835 in Giles Co TN (age 15 in 1850, 27 in 1860). She married twice and had children from each marriage, according to Moses D Doggett who gave a 25 February 1892 deposition in Marshall Co on who the heirs of Mariah East were. Doggett didn’t say who the husbands or children were. Doggett stated that Elizabeth was dead by 1892.

The first husband was Daniel Marshall Freeman, and the second was John S Dwyer, from information for descendant Patricia Gardner. With husband John Dwyer, she had two daughters. When Elizabeth died in 1888, the Dwyer daughters went to live with their aunt “Puss” Talley in Spring Place, in southern Marshall Co. Daniel M Freeman was born in TN in 1815, and in 1860 he and Elizabeth were living in the Cornersville area of Giles Co.

Since the pre-1865 marriage records for Giles Co were destroyed during the Civil war, we have no marriage date for Elizabeth and Daniel Freeman. In 1860 she was his wife, age 27, and he had children ranging from 18 down to 1 year old. Elizabeth was of age to be the parent of only perhaps the youngest three. All of Daniel’s children, in 1860, were: James F, age 18; John, age 15; Amanda J, age 9; Sarah, age 5; and Elizabeth, age 1. For now, it is assumed that only the last child is Elizabeth’s The three children from both marriages were-*

1.    Elizabeth Freeman, b 1859 (15q)

2.    Sophia Blanche Dwyer (LW)

3.    Mariah Abernathy Dwyer, married Sidney G Caneer and they had two children-

      a.    Clifford Caneer, married Mary Ellen Wolaver and they had-*

             1.    Clifford Caneer Jr, died in October 2004. (PC)

             2.    Patricia Caneer, married _____ Gardner. (PC) (PC)

      b.    Gladys Elizabeth Caneer, married Leamon Bowers and had two children-*

             1.    Clarence Bowers (PC)

             2.    Helen Bowers, married _____ Crane. (PC) (PC)

In 1860 Moses Dogget (age 23) was living in Giles Co with his wife Elizabeth _____. She was age 19, born (about 1841) in TN . Moses was born about 1837 in TN. At that time, Moses and wife had no children and lived near Cornersville. (EP,LW,15knqr)

Harriet H Abernathy [E1b9d], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born in January 1831 in Giles Co TN (the 1880 census of Marshall Co gives her age as 46, hence born in 1834 or 1833). She probably married about 1855, had a daughter, then married John H Freeman, probably in the 1860s. John was born in TN in January 1842 (1880 census gave his age as 35, hence born about 1844), so he was too young to be the father of Harriet's daughter Lenora, who was age 14 in 1870; Lenora was using the Freeman family name. Harriet was not living with her mother and two sisters in 1860, so was probably already married. She was still alive in 1892. In 1870 she was living two doors from her mother and next door to her sister Louisa. In 1880, Harriet’s mother was living with Harriet and John and niece Mollie Caruthers, age 13, but none of their children were. The 1900 census of Marshall Co TN shows that Harriet had only one child, and that child was still alive. That census also showed that Harriet married 34 years prior, or in 1866. So the only child who could be Harriet’s was Frank. Her children were-

1.    Lenora Freeman, b 1856

2.    Frank Freeman, b 1864 (EP,15knqr,17su)

Jane R Abernathy [E1b9f], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born around 1833 in Giles Co TN. She married John D Jones about 1858, probably in Giles Co, and was dead by February 1892; on that date a J R Jones gave a deposition in Marshall Co on who the heirs of Maria Abernathy were. John was born in TN in 1823. In 1860 they lived in Giles Co near Cornersville. Jane had a daughter who was an adult in 1892-

1.    Babe Jones, b Sep 1859

John had six children from a prior marriage to Lucinda _____, who was born in TN in 1823: William O, born 1844; Benjamin P, born 1846; John R, born 1848; Henry B, born 1849; Thomas P, born 1852; and Pressly C, born in 1853. All were born in TN. (EP,15jknq)

Louisa Abernathy [E1b9a], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born in 1826 in Giles Co TN. In 1860 she was age 34, living with her mother and two youngest sisters. Louisa married _____ Caruthers in the 1860s, and was dead by 1892. Her husband was not living with her in 1870, so may have been dead by then, and Louisa was living with her son next door to her mother (as Lucy Carruthers). Louisa and her son were not found in 1880. She had at least one child, and perhaps two-

1.    Andy Caruthers, b 1866

In 1880 in Marshall Co Mollie Caruthers was living with Louisa’s sister Harriet. Mollie was age 13 then, and was listed as a “niece” of Harriet’s husband John. (EP,15jknqr,17s)

Mary Frances Abernathy [E1b9j], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born 4 November 1839 in Giles Co TN. In 1860 she was living with her mother and two sisters. Mary married Alfred McVey “Mick” Compton, the youngest son of Isaac Compton and Barbara Smith, on 3 November 1863, probably in Giles Co since they were living there in 1870. Mary Frances was alive in 1892. Mick was born in TN (some sources say Spartanburg Co SC) on 5 October 1842, and died 24 October 1913 at Decatur in Morgan Co AL. Mary Frances died in Giles Co on 25 January 1903. They lived in Giles Co for years where Mick was a farmer and a machinist. After Mary Frances died, Mick married Effie Clifton Johnson and they lived at Decatur, AL. Mick and Mary Frances had ten children-

1.    Stonewall Jackson Compton, b 1863

2.    Isaac Buckner Compton, b 14 Jul 1865

3.    Effie Ethelene Compton, b 6 Sep 1867

4.    Harper Berriman Compton, b Oct 1869

5.    Ada M Compton b1872

6.    Eurodias Compton, b 1874

7.    Clayton Abernathy Compton, b 9 May 1876

8.    Etta Compton, b 1879

9.    Marvin Ditzler Compton, b 5 Aug 1881

10.  Estelle Compton, b 7 Sep 1884

In 1870 there was an Alphonce Compton living next door to Mike and Mary. He, too, was a machinist, age 23. With wife Effie, Mick had three more children: Roland Compton, Mildred Compton, and Clifton Compton. (EP,JH,TW, 15knqrs)

Matilda L Abernathy [E1b9b], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born in 1827 in Giles Co TN. She was living with her mother in 1850 in Giles Co, in civil district 17, as Matilda L Abernathy, age 23. She married a Nance, per the Walton S & Elizabeth East Anderson research of 1932. In 1850, living next door to Matilda’s mother’s home was Jefferson Nance and his wife Matilda L Nance, age 24. Jefferson was born in TN in November 1823. His wife was Matilda L, age 24 in the 1850 census living with him. Matilda L Abernathy had married Jefferson Amzi Nance about 1847. In 1850 they lived next to her recently widowed mother Mariah, and Matilda actually spent hours per day at her mother’s home with her infant child or children, while her husband was outside working on the farm. Mariah would have likely told the census taker that the young woman in her house was her daughter, thus placing Matilda in two homes that day. Then in 1860, a “J A Nance” and his wife “Matilda Nance” were living in Ray Co MO, in Fishing River Twp. Mr Nance and wife Matilda were ages 36 then, and both born in TN. In 1870 they were still there, this time as “Jeff A Nance” and “Matilda Nance,” ages 49 and 48. This must be the daughter who moved to MO and who wasn’t found in Giles nor in Marshall Counties after 1850. They were still in Ray Co in 1880. In that census, he was “Jefferson A Nance” and his wife was “Matilda Nance.” They gave their ages as 56 and 55; Matilda also reported that her parents were born in NC and VA. They apparently spent much of the rest of their lives in Fishing River Twp. Matilda died between 1880 and 1900; in 1900 Jeff was living in Clay county, next door to his son Tom, and was living with his daughter Martha and her family. Matilda and Jeff had seven children-

1.    Jane Nance, b 1848

2.    Thomas Jefferson Nance, b 26 Dec 1848

3.    Virginia N Nance, b 1851

4.    John B Nance, b 1854

5.    Mary E Nance, b Aug 1856

6.    Martha C Nance, b Feb 1859

7.    Benjamin F Nance, b 1864

Agnes O Jones, an 11 year old girl born in MO, was living with Jeff and Matilda in 1870. In the 1850 census of Ray Co MO, there were two Nance men who had come from TN: Jackson Nance, born 1817, and Bird Nance, born 1815. The Nance families in Giles Co came from neighboring Rutherford Co TN. One of the early Settlers of Rutherford Co was Bird Nance, born in 1772. (EP,M24,JY,15jkn,158qr)

Sarah J Abernathy [E1b9e], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born in Giles Co TN in 1832. In December 1869 she was living with her mother eight miles from Lynnville in Giles Co, but was not in her mother's household in 1860. Sallie had married Dr Joseph C Roberts, probably in 1859 or early 1860, had no children yet, and they were living near Hammond’s store. Dr Roberts was born about 1820 in AL. In 1870 and in 1880 they were living in Pulaski. Sarah was still alive in 1892. With the income a doctor would earn, it would be probable that if they were buried in Giles Co, their stones would be substantial enough to survive long enough to be recorded. But there is no record of their gravestones, nor the gravestones of their sons. Hence, they probably moved from Giles Co after 1880. By 1880 she had three children-*

1.    Joseph C Roberts, b 1860 in MS (15rs)

2.    Walter E Roberts, b 1865 in Giles Co TN. There was a Walter Roberts, age 44 in 1910, living at Franklin, Williamson Co TN (census page 72b). He was married to Sallie B Ewing, and they had three children. This person fits the prior info we have on Walter. (15rs)

3.    Sallie Beth Roberts, b 1867 in Giles Co TN. (15rs)

In 1870 Sarah Morris, age 17 from MS, was living with Dr Roberts and Sarah Abernathy in Pulaski. In 1880 servant Katie Amos, age 65, was living with the Roberts family. (EE,EP,15knqrs)

Virginia Abernathy [E1b9h], daughter of Mariah East and Wilkins H Abernathy, was born 26 February 1837 in Giles Co TN. She married James Hardy Compton on 22 February 1855. He was born in TN 10 October 1836, and was a farmer. Virginia was still alive in 1892, but James had died 25 July 1876. He was a son of Jasper Compton of Spartanburg Co SC and Elizabeth Calhoun. By 1860 they had three children born in Giles Co, and in 1880, Virginia, now a widow, was living in neighboring Marshall Co. She later married William Talley on 6 March 1882 in Marshall Co. Virginia died 12 October 1915 and was buried in Short Cemetery in Marshall Co with some of her children and grandchildren. She and James had seven children-

She married John W DeBerry, a merchant, on 16 February 1893 in Hardin Co (John was age 29 when married). He and his family ran a dry goods and clothing store in Savannah. John was born in TN in February 1863, son of Benjamin DeBerry and Mary Ann Blevins. Cora died in 1920 and John then married a woman about 17 years younger than he. She was probably Sarah Towers, who is buried next to John. If so, she was born in 1878 in TN and died in 1968 (and lied about her age by two years on the 1930 census). John died in 1946; and is buried in the Savannah Cemetery, as is Cora. By 1910 they had five children-
