Primary Sources

A marriage bond exists in the NC Archives that establishes the date Solomon Clayton and Frances Carver’s marriage as March 1, 1806. Census records have been used to establish some dates. Frances' age is listed as 75 in the 1850 census, so 1775 is used as her birth year. In the 1850 census she is listed in the household of her eldest son. She is not listed in the 1860 census, so she is presumed to have died between 1850 and 1860. Records of settlement of Solomon’s estate in 1849 exist in the NC Archives, so 1849 is presumed to be the year of his death.

Secondary Sources

A helpful source for the Person County Carver family is Keith Carver’s book. The copy in my collection is: The Carver Family Source Book, Volume II, 5th Edition. Compiled by Keith Carver. September 1992, Pelham, Massachusetts.

Solomon Clayton, Sr. is included in Brown, Clayton, as individual “SC2” on page 57.

Additional Research To Be Done

The naming patterns within this extended family suggest that Frances Carver’s mother’s maiden name was Draper. Francis Carver named her first son John Draper Clayton. One of Frances’ brothers named a son Draper Carver. The Draper family name did exist in Person County during the time period.

1 - John Draper Clayton

John Draper Clayton was the eldest of nine children born to Solomon and Frances Carver Clayton and one of the two who remained in Person County, North Carolina when seven migrated to Western Kentucky.

First Marriage

John Draper Clayton                             b:04 March 1808         d:April 1893

Elizabeth M. Clayton                            b:1810                         d:“Polly”

m:04 November 1828 [1]

John D. and Elizabeth had 16 children, 13 of whom lived to marry and have families themselves. Of the 3 children who died, the names of the two who died as children were used again for later children, Marion Thomas and Alexander.

A large percentage of the "Claytons" living in Person County, North Carolina, today are descendants of John D. Clayton. An easy way to identify John Draper Clayton through nickname "Forty Dollar John" explained in the following story.

John D. Clayton is given credit for inventing the first sheet iron flue for curing tobacco in Person County. That year he sold tobacco for $40.00 per hundred, the highest price ever paid at that time, and was afterward called "Forty Dollar John".

The following account appears on page 61 of Alexander R. Foushee's Reminiscences:

In the old days of red tobacco, a rather amusing and unusual circumstance occurred on the warehouse sale floor in Clarksville, Virginia, which was the main tobacco market for this whole section. Old man John D. Clayton, of Person County, and one of the most honest men in it, had a load of tobacco on the floor. It was being sold and the price of one pile had gone up as high as $40. The old man got excited and rushing among the bidders told them to stop bidding, that $40 was more than it was worth. These circumstances gave him the name of "Forty Dollar" John Clayton ever afterward. At this time $15.00 was considered a high price.

Second Marriage

John Draper Clayton                             b:                                 d:

Minerva Carver Brooks                        b:                                 d:

m:November 29, 1878

At the time of his second marriage John Draper was 70 and his new bride 60. Minerva's first husband was Aaron Brooks who had been captured during the War Between the States and died in prison in Elmyra, New York. John Draper Clayton outlived his second wife by 10 years. Cite C-T article.

John Draper Clayton lived most of his married life in the Olive Hill area of Person County, North Carolina. The 1850 census shows his mother, Frances Carver Clayton, age 75, living with him.

John Draper Clayton is buried on the farm in a family cemetery now deep in the woods of the farm, but most likely at the time of his death near an access road for the farm. There is no marker for the grave of Elizabeth Clayton; however, she is most likely buried with her husband. The cemetery includes two other graves marked by tombstones and several dozen graves marked only by fieldstones. The additional marked graves are: James T. Long, a son-in-law of John Draper and Allen Yancey Clayton, the eldest son of John Draper.

Following the death of John Draper Clayton, his son, Solomon Daniel Clayton, purchased the farm. Solomon Daniel Clayton lived on the farm for his lifetime, living in the house that I presume was built by John Draper. One of Solomon Daniel Clayton's sons (my Grandfather), Flem Oscar Clayton, lived on the farm and after the death of Susan Frances Morton Clayton moved into the home place with Solomon Daniel. Solomon Daniel Clayton and his wife, Susan Frances Morton, are buried in a family cemetery beside the present entrance road to the farm.

Following the death of Solomon Daniel Clayton, part of the farm was purchased by his son Flem Oscar Clayton and another part by his son Nat R. Clayton. After Nat's early death, Flem purchased the second portion of the farm from Nat's widow.

Following the death of Flem Oscar Clayton, the farm was sold at auction in two parts, corresponding to the portions that had been owned by Flem and Nat. The portion originally owned by Flem and containing the home place was purchased by Garnett Carr, a great grandson of Marion Thomas Clayton, a brother of Solomon Daniel Clayton.

Civil War Service

Several of John Draper Clayton's sons and sons-in-law served as Confederate Soldiers during the Civil War. A summary of those who served is included here. All served in Company E, 35th Regiment, North Carolina Troops.

Company E known as the "Person Boys" was raised in Person County and was enlisted at Roxboro on September 25, 1861. It was mustered into state service on October 29, 1861, as was assigned to the 35th Regiment N.C. Troops.  The company functioned thereafter as part of the 35th Regiment.

Much of the information pertaining to Civil War service that follows is from the following reference: North Carolina Troops, 1861-1865, A Roster, Volume IX, Infantry, 32nd - 35th and 37th Regiments. Compiled by Weymouth T. Jordan, Jr. Raleigh, North Carolina. Division of Archives and History, 1983

Long, James T., Private [son-in-law]

Clayton, Green J.  Private

Company E, 15 Regiment, CSA. Resided in Person County and was by occupation a farmer prior to enlisting in Wake County at age 26, July 15, 1862, for the war.  Present or accounted for until captured at or near Petersburg, Virginia October 1, 1864. Confined at Point Lookout, Maryland, until released on May 13, 1865, after taking Oath of Allegiance.

Green Jefferson Clayton is buried in the Long Family Cemetery at Ceffo. His grave is marked (only) by a CSA tombstone. The Tombstone gives no date but does appear to indicate the unit as Company E, 35th Regiment. This is inconsistent with the referenced source which does NOT list him with E-35th and DOES list him with E-15.

Of those listed, A. Y., James ("Jim"), and William B. Long were married prior to the time of their service in the Confederate Army. Solomon, Marion, and James T. Long married after the war.

George Duncan may have remarried after Elizabeth's death. I found a reference to a marriage in Hopkins County, KY, on 05 June 1883 between George Duncan and Elizabeth Moody.

From The Heritage of Hopkins County, page 102, “Duncan-Parish” by Retha Tarter and Lesia Pendley.

Oscar Lee Duncan and Luetta Parish were united in marriage 1918.

Oscar (born June 17, 1898) the son of the late Betty Brinkley and George Duncan.

As a small child, Betty traveled with her family from North Carolina in a covered wagon. She was married first to a Moody. They had two children: John and Joe Moody.

George Washington Duncan was married first to Mary Elizabeth Villians. They had six children: Jeff, Jim, Wash, Elsie, Edd, and Nora.

This 1880 census contains incorrect information. Most of the ages are incorrect. Simeon had remarried on April 15, 1872 to Margaret Brown. The name of his wife should therefore be shown as Margaret or Maggy. These error may be the result of a poor effort on the part of the census enumerator or possibly the information was obtained from a neighbor rather than from the family itself. One of Simeon's sons, Solomon age 43, is listed nearby in household 205, family 210.

Secondary Source Information

Harris, Clayton, includes information about Simeon Clayton as SC10 on page 62.

See Article 127 in Person County Heritage, Volume II for additional information about this family.

4 - William Alexander Clayton

Son of Solomon and Frances Clayton.

First Marriage

William Alexander Clayton                                b: 1819 in Person County, NC (1815?)

                                    d: 1876

Sallie Yarbrough                                               b: 1816? in Person County, NC

                        d:1850

m:October 21, 1839 [30]

g:Clayton family cemetery, Hopkins County

She was the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. William Yarbrough.

. Brothers married sisters. Solomon Clayton, Jr. and his brother William Alexander Clayton married sisters Alcie Yarbrough and Sallie Yarbrough.

Note from Becky on September 19, 2002:

You have Sallie Yarbrough married to William Alexander Clayton. Her parents being Mr. and Mrs. William Yarbrough. And her sister Alsie married to Solomon Clayton. Here is the problem: The Sally Yarbrough, who was the daughter of William Yarbrough and Anna Winstead married Jesse Buchanan, Sept. 29, 1840.

In William Yarbrough's will, he names his children as Samuel W. Yarbrough, Elizabeth Farmer, Charles Yarbrough, Jane Clayton, Susanna Brown, Alsey Clayton, John Yarbrough, Manley Yarbrough, Lewis Yarbrough, Mary Yarbrough, William W. Yarbrough and Sally Buchanan. So the question is, who was the Sallie Yarbrough who married William A. CLayton? Could she and William have divorced and she remarried? I know my Sallie Yarbrough didn't die in 1850, because in the 1870 census of Hopkins Co. she and Jesse are living with Sallie's neice Malinda Clayton Dunkerson.

Ed: Becky is correct! So I need to see the original marriage bond for William Alexander’s first marriage. Apparently William Yarbrough is listed there (as Sallie’s father?). The clue to Sallie’s parents is probably the name of the bondsmand, Francis Marion Yarbrough. At any rate the wife’s of William Alexander Clayton and Solomon Clayton, Jr. are then not sisters.

In early 1844, when their first child, John, was only 3 years old, the family moved by covered wagon to Hopkins County, Kentucky, about 6 miles from Madisonville. The trip reportedly took 8 weeks.

6 - William P. Clayton

William P. Clayton was the sixth child of Solomon Clayton and Frances Carver.

William P. Clayton has previously been the least understood of all of the children of Solomon Clayton, Sr. All of William’s children were girls, making it more difficult to trace the family. His second marriage was to the sister of his first wife. His father-in-law had died before the family left Person County, North Carolina, so his mother-in-law and her children who were still living at home at the time moved to Kentucky. The 1880 census indicates that William also married a third time.

Sarah F. Clayton 1845 may be my great grandmother. It's been so long since I've done any work on that side of my family, I'll have to check to see if that's a good possibility. She would have had to marry John Bumpass because I'm sure he's my great grandfather. [although Sarah would have been married in Kentucky.]

From Pam, September 6:

I saw the death certif of Malinda Catherine Owens and it shows her parents as Will Clayton and Mary Valines. She is buried in Shady Grove Cemetery.

Also from Pam on September 6:

County? WEBSTER Dates on the certificate? DIED 12/8/1913 Who was the informant? ALBERT ERVIN

If this is the daughter of William P Clayton who was the second wife of Henry Owen(s) then the mother does not match. William's wife at the time his daughter Malinda was born was Elizabeth Fuller. DEATH CERTIF ONLY SAYS WILL CLAYTON - NOT WILL P CLAYTON. COULD BE INFORMANT MADE A MISTAKE WHAT IS THE MARRIAGE DATE OF ELIZ FULLER AND WILLIAM CLAYTON

There is a recorded marriage for Malinda Catherine Clayton to Henry Owen on 09 Apr 1868. Based on the census, Malinda was born circa 1847. SHE WAS BORN 5 NOV 1847

Henry Owen's first wife, Nancy Clayton dau of Solomon Clayton Sr, is buried in the Tapp Cemetery, I think in Webster Co, just south of Poole, Ky. I have a picture of her stone, but there is no stone for him. I wonder if he is buried in the Shady Grove Cemetery?

The agricultural section of the 1850 census lists William as having 1 horse, 1 cow, 5 sheep, and 4 swine. The entry for land is "included". I suspect that this is because he was living on the farm of Solomon Clayton, Sr. and therefore had no separate land to be listed.

I welcome assistance in identifying the 13 year old, John Owen, listed in the 1850 census. I assume that a connection is likely with Henry Owen who married William P. Clayton’s sister, Nancy.

Possibly connected is an Owen mentioned in Person County Heritage. Volume I, Article indicates that John Ed Owen “came to Person County by wagon train from Kentucky around 1850.” He subsequently married Susan Fuller on 23 May 1857 in Person County. An opportunity for research!

RECHECK THIS CENSUS FOR AGES

Fuller Relatives in the 1870 Census with William Clayton Family

Although a bit afar from Clayton genealogy, I want to include some detail I have pertaining to Sarah C Van Hook and Mary E Taylor, both listed in the 1870 census with the William Clayton family. Both are related through William’s Fuller in-laws.

Mahala (Catherine), William’s second wife, was born about 1830 in Person Co North Carolina. She died between 1870 and 1880 Union Co Kentucky. She was the daughter of Abraham and Sarah/Sally Clayton Fuller who were married 13 November 1818 in Person County, North Carolina. Abraham died before December 1857 in Person County, North Carolina (Will Inventory). His widow, Sarah/Sally, moved to Union County, Kentucky were she is listed in the 1860 census but not the 1870. Abraham's parents were Isaiah and Patsey/Martha Williams Fuller.

William Clayton’s second wife, Mahala (Catherine), had these siblings:

  • Elizabeth C. Fuller b. abt 1822 Person Co NC d.bef 30 June 1865 Union Co. Ky.
  • Susan Fuller b. abt 1829 Person Co NC
  • Martha Caroline Fuller b.1832 Person Co NC
  • James C. Fuller b 1835 married Settie ??

Mahala's sister Martha Caroline Fuller first married William R Van Hook on 16 November 1852 in Person County North Carolina. They had two daughters: Minerva Jane VanHook and Sarah C Van Hook. William R Van Hook died intestate in 1858. Martha asked for and received a year's support, the note on the application says that the estate will be settled in the next session of the court.

Martha Fuller Van Hook subsequently married James Henry Taylor on 14 February 1860 in Union Co Kentucky. Mary E and Margaret Ann Taylor are the children of their marriage. Martha Fuller Van Hook Taylor died after March 1867 before 1870 in Henderson Co Kentucky.

The explanation for the two names included in the 1870 census is that both Sarah C. Van Hook and Mary E. Taylor are the daughters of William P. Clayton’s sister-in-law Martha Fuller Van Hook, one from each of her marriages.

Thanks to Rosa Barton and Chris Moon for providing most of this information about the Fuller family.

Webster County was formed in 1860. Check to see if William actually moved from one county to another or if the change to Webster is just a result of the formation of a new county.

This census data indicates that William had a third marriage and a child by the third wife.

Deeds - UNION COUNTY, KY

Union County, KY, Book 28, pages 230 - 231, 10 March 1877, A W Sights to R J Clayton (Hopkins County) and William P Clayton (Webster County), $1600, land on Highland Creek.

A Word of Caution

I find the book Clayton, The Story of the Clayton Family of North Carolina and Kentucky and Allied Families (1972) by Patricia Brown Harris to be very useful. Other researchers should be aware, however, of an error in the book pertaining to William P. Clayton.

The information in the book for William Clayton identifies him as “SC13” and appears on page 64 the book. My research indicates that Mrs. Harris has identified both William Clayton’s first and second wives incorrectly. She indicates that William was “thought to have married first December 21, 1865, to Martha Wheeler.” Martha Wheeler married another William Clayton, William the son of Simeon Thomas Clayton and Mary Painter, not William Clayton, son of Solomon Clayton and Frances Carver. The William who did marry Martha Wheeler was a nephew of the William who did not marry Martha.

One way to distinguish these two William Claytons would be to designate them as NC and KY! William Clayton, son of Solomon Clayton, Sr. and Frances Carver migrated to Western Kentucky from Person County, NC. The William Clayton who did marry Martha Wheeler never left North Carolina.

One small error is the assumption that William Clayton (of Kentucky) was second married to Ann E. Buchanan (October 8, 1874, in Hopkins County, Kentucky). My research indicates that the second wife of William Clayton (of Kentucky) was Catherine Fuller, daughter of Abraham Fuller and Sarah Clayton. William Clayton and Catherine Fuller married on June 30, 1865, in Union County, Kentucky. I identify Ann E Buchanan as his third wife.

7 - Frances Malinda Clayton

Frances Malinda Clayton was the seventh child of Solomon Clayton and Frances Carver.

What do I know about William P. Pool?

·        His mother was Francis Pool born about 1795. Her maiden name was likely Durden.

·        The James Durden who was the bondsman for his marriage was likely his uncle. James Durden married Elizabeth Pool in 1824. Thus if James Durden was brother to William’s mother Frances, and James’ wife Elizabeth was sister to William’s father, brother-sister married sister-brother.

·        He is likely related to the William P. Pool who had several deeds registered in the late 1790s.

The next deed is of interest because it may aid in identifying a Durden connection.

The next two deeds could be the William P. Pool who married Frances M. Clayton:

·        Deed Book Q, page 112

Marriage Bonds - Person County, NC

On November 17, 1847, Wm P. Pool was the bondsman for the marriage bond of Richard (Jefferson) Clayton and Roan Slaughter in Person County. Twenty-four months later Wm P. Pool married Richard's sister.

June 8, 1824, James Durden and Elizabeth Pool were married. This is a generation before William P. Pool's marriage to Frances Malinda Clayton, so Elizabeth Pool could be William's much older sister, but more likely his aunt. If true, this would explain why one of William and Frances Malinda’s sons was named James Durden Pool.

From the 1850 census we can conclude that William and Melinda were living with his mother, Francis Pool. Francis Pool would have been born circa. 1795.

Check Person Co for marriage of Francis __?__ to __?__ Pool about 1815+

Earliest Person Co Pool marriage in the book is 1822 and it is not to Francis.

On 8 September 2002 I posted messages to both the Pool mailing list and message board.

The agricultural section of the 1850 census lists William P. Pool as having 1 horse, 2 cows, 18 sheep, and 5 swine.

The entry for land is "included". I suspect that this is because he was living on the farm of Solomon Clayton, Sr. and therefore had no separate land to be listed.

Note that the first child, James D. Pool, was born in North Carolina about 1851 and the second, Frances M., in Kentucky about 1853. This would place the migration of William and Frances Clayton Pool from Person County, NC to Webster County, KY in the time period between 1851 and 1853.

They moved to Hopkins County, Kentucky, in 1858 by covered wagon. Some of Jeff's brothers and sisters moved with him. Jefferson and Roann had only one child, Solomon Thomas Clayton.

Harris, Clayton [need specific citation]

Jeff, Roann, Solomon Thomas, and some of Jeff's brothers left Person County, North Carolina in 1858 to come to Kentucky.  They loaded their covered wagons with their possessions for the journey to Kentucky and it took seven weeks to get to Hopkins County, Kentucky.

Jeff and Roann settled on a farm across the road from the Mark Bowles farm near Olive Branch Church and lived there 29 years. The same year that Jeff and Roann moved to Kentucky, their son's future wife was born on a farm about 3 miles from where they settled.

The only child of Jeff and Roann was Solomon Thomas Clayton. Thomas and Elizabeth A. Buchanan were married in Hopkins County, Kentucky, on June 5, 1873. He was 24 years old and she was 15. They lived with his parents for 14 years.  In 1887 they moved to the Dr. Waller farm about one mile west on the same road in the heart of the "Shakerag Hills" where they spent the rest of their happy life.

The home place stayed in the Clayton family until Garnett, Thomas, and Elizabeth Clayton's youngest son, retired a few years ago and moved to Hanson, Kentucky. The farm was sold then.

Roann was from Granville County, N.C. The birth and death dates above are those given on tombstone over their graves. The spelling of Roann's name varies. [Rebecca Roan Slaughter Clayton]

The tombstone over her grave has her name as "Roan". Jeff and Roann moved to Kentucky about 1858

The parents of Rebecca Roan Slaughter Clayton were: [98]

Thomas Scott Slaughter                        b January 15, 1804 NC            d: October 19, 1878

Charlotte Evans                                    b: circa 1805 NC                     d: December 25, 1844 NC

m:Sept 15, 1824 NC

Rebecca Roan Slaughter Clayton’s sister was Leatha (Lucy) who marred at Curneal who died about 1879 and is supposed to be buried in Clayton family cemetery (She is Pam’s great grandmother.) A word of caution to researchers

I add a note of caution to those who might research Coleman Clayton by searching various internet repositories. I have great faith in the research of cousin Jim Clayton of Burlington, NC. Jim’s research confirms that Solomon Clayton, Sr. and Coleman Clayton are brothers. I assure you that Coleman is not Solomon Clayton, Sr.’s father!

CLAYTON, Robert TAPP, Lucreacia 09 December 1830

Lucretia is the daughter of William Tapp and Rebecca Fowler. Born 1810 and died 1864.

From Beverly, 22 September 2002

Susan Lucretia Tapp, full sister to my Ruth Tapp (my ggggrandmother), b. 1810 in Hopkins County, KY, d. there in 1864. She married a Robert Clayton December 09, 1830, in Person County, N. C., son of Coleman Clayton

From the Tapp book [page 275, need title citation]:

They moved to Hopkins County, Ky. Apparently along with or before Eli, John, Joel, and Vincent since Robert witnessed Eli’s deed. They settled in the Shakerag Community of Hopkins County, a name which was derived apparently from the community by the same name in North Carolina from whence they came. Robert and Lucretia became membes of the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church, of the Cypress Creek Association, which had been established in 1827.

The family of Robert and Lucretia, along with families headed by Warham Clayton and Richard Clayton, first appeared in the 1840 Census of Hopkins County, Kentucky.

I have long respected the work of John Pecarina. On July 23, 1999 John posted the note below on www .genforum.org

Re: Coleman Clayton of NC

Have found records only for one Coleman Clayton in Person Co. Coleman Clayton was born in 1760, according to Revolutionary War Veteran Pension Records. This year of birth is consistent with census records from 1800-1830. He was born in the area of Granville County that became Bute and later Warren Co. Earliest mention I have seen is his signature, along with probable father John Clayton Sr and brother John Clayton Jr, on a 1779 petition to divide Caswell County.

His 1800-1830 census households indicate his children were born after 1790, and that he may have had as many as two sons; one born between 1790-1800 (Robert) and one born about 1810 (thought to be John T Clayton, who was married 18 Mar 1834 in Person County to Jane Yarbrough.) Both apparently left for Kentucky in the 1830s. In his will, Coleman Clayton named only his widow Jane and two daughters, Nancy and Polly.

Whether Jane Layton was mother to his children is left for conjecture. The Person County marriage bond for Coleman Clayton and Jane Layton is dated 6 May 1820; yet she supplied an earlier bond dated 14 Oct 1793 when trying to receive bounty lands due to her deceased husband Coleman for his service in the Revolution.

The story naming Coleman Clayton as father to many of the Claytons who eventually appear in Person County records has no basis in fact, although it may have come from a several generations old oral family history. Unfortunately, this story is found in several places, including LDS holdings.

Migration to Kentucky

One of the fascinating parts of researching Clayton genealogy is the migration of so many members of the family from Person County, NC to western Kentucky.

Robert Clayton and wife were dismissed from Flat River Church in Person County, NC in October 1833. John Tapp and wife also left in 1833. Robert Clayton and wife Lucretia Tapp joined the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church in 1835.

Formation of Counties

From Henderson County Genealogy Society web page …

In December 1778, through the influence of Colonel Richard Henderson and Nathaniel Hart, the Virginia House of Delegates granted to the Richard Henderson (Transylvania) Company, 200,000 acres of land in Kentucky situated between the Ohio and Green Rivers. In 1783, the North Carolina legislature granted the same to the company. The result being that Henderson County was formed out of part Christian County and was organized on June 4, 1799. Named in honor of Colonel Richard Henderson, one of the original founders of Kentucky. The county initially encompassed all of the territory from which the present Hopkins County was formed in 1806. Union County was formed in 1811, and Webster County was formed in 1860. The county seat of Henderson was incorporated in 1810.

Sources

Many of these sources are referenced in the body of this work using shortened names that are given here.

Clayton, The Story of the Clayton Family of North Carolina and Kentucky and Allied Families, Patricia Brown Harris, 1972. (The short reference for this book is Brown, Clayton.)The author privately published this book. This volume primarily includes information about several of the children of Solomon Clayton, Sr., of Person County from who Mrs. Brown is descended. Mrs. Brown is no longer actively doing genealogical research. Several individuals in Person County have this book in their private collections. The Person County Library does not have a copy. A copy is available in the Madisonville, Kentucky Public Library.

One error that I have noted in this book deserves mention in order to avoid confusion. Although Mrs. Harris’ research is sound, her information about William Clayton is at odds with mine. Her entry for William Clayton identifies him as “SC13” in her numbering system and appears on page 64 of her book.

My research indicates that Mrs. Harris has identified both William Clayton’s first and second wives incorrectly. She indicates that William was “thought to have married first December 21, 1865, to Martha Wheeler.”

Martha Wheeler married another William Clayton, William the son of Simeon Thomas Clayton and Mary Painter, not William Clayton, son of Solomon Clayton and Frances Carver.

The Carver Family Source Book, Volume II, 5th Edition, Keith R. Carver, Pelham, MA 1992 This book provides information about the descendants of William Carver of Person County. The book is very professionally done, including graphics for maps that visually indicate migration. A full index is included. The book was commercially printed in both hard and soft cover.

The Heritage of Person County, (Volume I), Person Co. Historical Society, 1981

This volume contains a complete index.

The Heritage of Person County, Volume II, Person Co. Historical Society, 1983

This volume contains an index that provides entries only for surnames, not given names. This makes any attempt to look up common surnames very time consuming.

Historical Sketch of Person County, Stuart T. Wright, The Womack Press, Danville, 1974. 232 pages. No index.

Reminiscences, A Sketch and Letters, Descriptive of Life in Person County in Former Days, Alexander R. Foushee, 1921, Reprinted 1960. 81 pages.

Not a traditional history book but a treasured collection (especially if one of your ancestors is included) of letters to the editor of the local newspaper that were written by Civil War veteran and businessman A. R. Foushee between 1914 and 1920. These letters provide delightful insights into the individuals and events of Roxboro and Person County as far back as the 1850s.

Originally printed in 1921 and reprinted by Taylor's Printing Shop in Roxboro in 1960 and 1988. Although an index was not included, someone has created an index that is available.

I purchased an additional copy of this book at Taylor's Printing in Roxboro sometime in early 1997 for $8.00 plus sales tax.

Person County NC Compilations, Land Grants, 1794, 1805, 1823 Tax Lists, Record Books Abstracts 1792 - 1820, Letters of Attorney, Katharine Kerr Kendall, 1978

Person County NC Marriage Records, 1792 - 1868, Katharine Kerr Kendall, 1983. 112 pages.

Person County North Carolina Marriage Records, 1792 - 1869. Frances T. Ingmire. 1984. 68 pages. Unlike the similar Kendall index, this book does not include in the listing the names of the bondsman/witness(es). For that reason I prefer using Kendall. Ingmire is presently available for purchase from several genealogical book stores.

Credits

One of the great joys of the genealogy hobby is meeting ones “cousins.” That has certainly been the case in my experience. Not only have I benefited from the exchange of information, but I have formed many lasting friendships.

Especially deserving of credit are many “cousins” who have both shared and been friends. Jim Clayton has been a Clayton researcher for many years and with such great results! Gwen Harralson showed me that the word “cousin” is magic. She shared her knowledge and enthusiasm for the entire Clayton family. Alice Clayton shared all of research and took us to the cemetery at Shakerag.

Especially helpful for their particular lines have been the following. Carolyn Dunbar and Mary Jane Burn for the Villines line; Jim Clayton for the Simeon line; Lewis Denton for information about Solomon Clayton, Jr.’s son Alexander Coleman Clayton’s second marriage to Annie Dayton Payne; Rosa Barton for help with William Clayton’s first and second wives, both Fullers;

The availability of the Internet has made communication and sharing an everyday occurrence. Several times I have had the pleasant experience of having an email correspondent send me valuable information after reading information that I have posted on the Internet. In many cases such unsolicited contributions have provided valuable information for my research.
