Riley Cowan was born September 15, 1803 in Tennessee. He was married January 9, 1823 in Tennessee? to Phoebe Acree; born February 17, 1804 in Kentucky. Their son, William Riley, was born October 6, 1828 in Tennessee. He was married December 14, 1847 to Zilla(h) Mayberry (Mabry); born April 25, 1827 in Tennessee.

William Riley fought in the Civil War, where he caught the measles and died, May 18 1865. One of their sons, Jacob Jasper, born June 29, 1854 married May 28, 1876 to Mary Jane Davis; born February 20, 1857 in Missouri. Mary Jane was the daughter of Phillip and Mary Hall Davis.
