His mother, Elizabeth Gentry's parents were well to do farmers living on the James River in Galena, Stone Co., Missouri. When Willis Carson's father Henry Carson Cagle died, his mother Elizabeth re-married, Willis didn't get along with his new step father, so when he was 9 years old, he walked from Galena, to Clarsville, Indian Territory to find his older brother, Allen. Willis married Bertha in 1901. We've heard the stories of his drinking and gambling but Margaret says, Bertha didn't take too much off him, she didn't allow drinking or gambling in their house. She did catch Willis drunk one time either tied him to the bed or sewed him up in the sheets and whipped the daylights out of him. Another time he came home drunk, riding his horse in the pouring rain, he fell off the horse in a puddle in front of the house. Bertha just went back inside, locked the doors and left him laying there. Willis eventually stopped the drinking and gambling and wouldn't let anybody on the place who was drinking.
