Mrs. James Harvey Clark, Nancy, hid her saddle under it during the Civil War to keep it from being taken by looters. One legend surrounding this man is that he was killed in a feud fight and the victor did a dance on the stone slab atop the grave. Newbury Jr (1802-1870) Spouse Mother: Rhoda (Roda) Montgomery (1806-) Spouse Notes: The James Montgomery old log cabin was moved and dedicated November 18, 1979 to the Carroll County, Historical Society to the Pioneer Park at Berryville, Arkansas. Delano Newberry whom helped disasemble it said it was a two story structure. And is now a one story structure because all boards were not useable in reconstruction. James Montgomery Newberry had a slave named Jess whom he had brought from Shelby, Tennessee to Arkansas. Jess had a bed located under the stair case so he would be able to get up and keep fire burning on cold winter nights. James Montgomery fathered 15 children in three marriages and was 69 years old at his death. He was listed as a Confederate soldier at Fayetteville, Arkansas. He was said to have owned all the good land above and below Hopewell, Arkansas. A term of school was held in the Newberry Thrashing barn according to data supplied by Coy Logan. I am dissatisied with this country. if I sell out I think I will leave near ___ I do not no where I will go. this is a powerful rough country but the land is good and is rising very fast (It) is only tolerable here Momey is scarce crops was tolerable good wheat was very good to me and Abe (made) some of 200 bushels Thge drouth injured corn very much. I have got the best young yoke of cattle in this country. If you will bring Peet out here I will pull them against him. I learnt from doctor's letter that there has been a great many weddings there I was glad to hear of that I am not married yet nor that is not the worst of it. I don't expect to be soon. Tell Gilly she need not wait on me any longer for I have ____ the ide of marring and if she get the chance to just break away wil be all right with me. Tell Netty I have not forgotten her yet and if she as forgot me it is all right with me Brother Tom's family is all well he is doing well..
