Generation No. 1

    1. John Wesley2 Standridge (Alexander1) was born 1816 in Franklin
County, Georgia, and died January 1865 in Richland Township, Newton
County, Arkansas. He married Mary Elizabeth Abt. 1832. She was born 1816
in Tennessee, and died in Richland Township, Newton County, Arkansas.

Notes for John Wesley Standridge:

John Standridge farmer & Mary C. both b. 1816 in GA., came to Richland in
1833.
Children: as of 1850 Matilda 17, Jeremiah 16, Samuel 15, Elizabeth 12,
John 11 Richard 9, Benjamin 6, Washington 2, all born in Ark.
(Richand Township, Newton County, Ar. 10/18/1850)

John Standridge was the son of Alexander and Elizabeth Standridge and was
born about 1816, Probably in Franklin County, Georgia. He was brother
to Martin Sr, Samuel James and Lemuel. John was married to Mary E. _____,
who was born about 1816 in Georgia and was still alive in 1870 census.
She may have moved to Meda, Arkansas area with Gates and Candy Standridge
Fox.

Along toward the end of the Civil War, Bushwackers raided John's place and
killed him along with his two youngest sons, Lemuel and Wash. According to
informatio included in John, Jr.s' pension application, this event occurred
in late January or early February of 1865. Alonzo Standridge said that the
reason they were killed was because John had five or six hundred dollors hid
that he wouldn't tell where it was hidden. Alonzo also said that it was just
before day break when John and the boys ran out to see what was disturbing
their chickens. Nancy told that her mother, Betsy, (John's daughter) picked
up her brother Wash and carried him back into the house after he had been
shot through the neck. All three are buried in Richland Cemetery in the same
grave on a featherbed. The women and children were the only ones left to bury
the dead men. They dug a large single grave which was quite shallow due to
their limited strength. They had no caskets or material to build them one,
so they carried the featherbeds from the house and they placed the bodies of
John and his three sons on a feather mattress, covered them with another
feather mattress, and spread the soil over them. In the many following years,
if a hole appeard on the shallow grave, featers would come out. This grave
is on the left, inside the gate and is now marked by a stone put up by Dallas
(Shorty) Standridge. The twins, Bessie and Dessie, showed him where the
grave was located.

There is also another story about why John and the sons where killed. It was
said that the reason John and the boys were killed is because he refused to
release his slaves, but have failded to find any records where any of the
Arkansas Standridges ever owned any slaves. The Newton County, Slave census
for 1860 shows a total of 24 slaves in Newton County, Arkansas and none of
them belonged to a Standridge. The Standridges' were Union Soldiers - not
Confederate.

John and Mary had a family of ten children.

Children of John Standridge and Mary Elizabeth are:
2 i. Martha/Martin3 Standridge, born 1833 in Carroll, Arkansas. She
married Cagle.
3 ii. Jeremiah "Jerry" Standridge, born December 25, 1834 in Carroll
