MARTIN TACKETT SMITH IN CIVIL WAR

Martin Tackett Smith enlisted in Company C, First Regiment, Arkansas
Infantry, Union in February and was mustered out August 20, 1865. Martin is
listed as deserted with others of the company, but was enlisted on August
30, 1863 to March of 1864 in Company D, Second Arkansas Cavalry, Union. He
states that he was captured once by Rebel Scouts and was kept about three
weeks till he got a chance to run away and come home and then went to the
Federal Army the first chance he got. His personal description was five
feet, six inches, dark complexion, dark hair and gray eyes. While in the
service he got the measles, they affected his eyes and he gradually went blind.
Martin was born August 27, 1938 Carroll County, Arkansas (now Boone County)
and died on March 4, 1926. Martin is buried at Log Hill Cemetery in Newton
County, Akansas. He married Rhoda Lucinda Standridge on May 9, 1856
Newton County, Arkansas. He was son of Thomas and Ferby Tackett Smith.
Martin had two brothers who also served in the Union Army, they were Tobby
Smith and Gif Smith. His brother Henry Smith served in the Confederate Army.
