  • Mossville
  • On September 19, 1889 a post office was established at Mossville; Fred W. Strode was appointed postmaster, remained so until Theodore Ober took the position, April 14, 1894. He ran the post office until March 14, 1898. Alice Day was sworn in March 14th and held the postion until May 3, 1898. On that May 3rd, William C. Moss was sworn in, held the position until October 28, 1898. Sarah Gipson was sworn in at that time, remained until July 27, 1901. Darcus Jane Moss ran the post office from July 27, 1901 until May 11, 1914. Betty Cline than held the position through November 27, 1919. At that time, Abbie Stephens took over the position and held it until March 18, 1925. Loren Harrison, husband of Mattie Grace Edgmon, ran the post office until November 16, 1933. My Grandma, Daisy B. Edgmon, was next to hold the position, remained until April 21, 1937. Virgil C. Edgmon, brother to Leither, was sworn in April 21st, held the position until his wife, Anna Reynolds Edgmon, took the position, May 18, 1952. Anna Edgmon was the last to run the post office, it was closed September 3, 1979. The post office did not have a permanent home...a small structure was usually erected at or near the residence of the indivdual who ran the office. My Grandpa built a small building to house the post office when grandma was appointed post master. At that time, their house was the first dwelling on the road, just across the highway from the Mossville Church. Water from their well was carried to the church house for use by those attending church. When school was in session, it was held in the church. Two buckets of water were taken to school every morning...in hot weather additional water was drawn and taken to school at noon. All drank from the dipper that hang on the wall. On their way home from school, hot and thirsty children stopped by the post office to get a drink of water and to get a snack of cornbread that grandma had made for them. After grandpa moved his family to Swain, the road was re-cut to the present location. The building that last housed the post office at Mossville is the last remaining of the several that were built. It is located near the home of the late Virgil Edgmon, on the road across from the church...
