Introduction To Will Books Of Newton County, ArkansasThe Newton County Clerk's office has only two books of wills, B and C. The Courthouse was burned during the Civil War, but this would not explain the loss of Will Book A, covering up to the year 1910. I believe that the wills found in the Miscellaneous Book are Book A of Newton County Wills. Several petitions of guardianship are also recorded therein. Book B has hand written wills; written into the book by the county clerk. Many are several pages long.
I copied the pertinent information out of Book B, giving the person who inherited under the will. If I
have several names listed, it means they had approximate equal shares, or the will states "divide equally".
Some wills listed numerous children and grandchildren. If the heir is not a relation, I tried to
state the connection, if it was given. I also tried to list location, if out of the county seat of
Jasper, Arkansas.
Book C is mostly typed wills with some hand written; which may have been copied on a copy machine and placed in the
book. These are mostly only a page or two long.
For Book C I only copied the alphabetical list from the book. Then I checked the will on every 50th
page (approximately) for the date the will was filed. You can tell by the page number what time period
it would be. For Example:
