POSSIBLY NAMED AFTER
EDWARD DORAN.
Edward Doran Mason was possibly named
after “our” Edward Doran. He was born
1814 in Ireland, and died 26 Jun 1876, in Passumpsic,
Vermont. He is buried in Passumpsic.
He married Betsey Ide,
and they had four children. Their son,
Edward Doran Mason Jr., was born 26 Dec 1846, in Passumpsic
– he became a minister in Massachusetts.
Our reason for believing in a possible
relation between this Edward and “ours” is in Aunt Lena’s notes. In the 1850s, Edward’s children were
spreading out across America, and wrote several letters to each other. Aunt Lena kept a list of letters received by
her grandfather, William. The letters
have been lost, but the list survives.
One entry is a letter from Uncle Thomas, written from Passumpsic. Perhaps,
on his way to Illinois where he settled, Thomas passed through Passumpsic to visit Edward Doran Mason? Later in her life, Aunt Lena was a teacher at
St. Johnsbury Academy, literally one village above Passumpsic. All of
these coincidences make one believe that Mason must be either somehow related
to, or named after, “our” Edward.
