Notes:
Born in Steinhude Nr. 138. Baptized as Wilhelm Hermann Brethauer, later spelled as W.H. Bredthauer. Master baker in Nr. 138 Steinhude. A short, jolly fellow, he met his wife at a dance, perhaps on Wilhelmstein, the island in the Steinhuder Meer. He came to the US on the ship Fulda (of the Norddeutsche Lloyd line), landing in New York on 16 June 1883, with his wife and four children. He came to be known as William Bredthauer. They first settled on Turtle Creek, near Elyria, Nebraska. Later the family moved to a farm just south of the Chalk Hills at Scotia Nebraska, with land in sections 21, 22, and 28. After they moved to Scotia, his son, William, lived and farmed there. The farm is presently (1982) occupied by Daryl Holt, a great-grandson. The three younger children were born in Nebraska. The original home burned down and was replaced. He opened the Bredthauer Department Store at 110 South Main in Scotia, later operated by sons Dick and Henry, then by Dick alone. In the 1910 census he is listed as a retired farmer. In 1911, he owned land in sections 21, 22, and 28 in Greeley County. He was a member of the German Lutheran Church Missouri Synod in Scotia.

Notes:
Or Karl Hackel or Haeckel or Heckel.

According to his 1892 naturalization papers, he was a subject of Austria before naturalization in the US. He was raised by step-parents and left home at the age of 13. He worked around until he went into the army, and was a soldier from 1870 to 1871. A bootmaker by trade, he came to the US with his wife on the S.S. Smidt (on its first voyage for the Bremer Dampfschiffahrts-Gesellschaft), bound from Bremen, landing in New York on 4 April 1872.

He lived at "Bentwater" (probably Pentwater) Michigan in 1872. He filed a declaration of intent to become a citizen in Platte County, Nebraska 29 August 1872. They lived in Niobrara, Nebraska 1873, then in Omaha, Nebraska for 3 months, where he worked as a butcher, putting on weight. They lived in Walnut Township (formed from Long Island Township in 1879), Phillips County, Kansas 1875-1880, farming a quarter section near Myrtle. There they had but two cows and a dog in 1875. On 31 December 1880 he said he was securing a home there and intended to remain in spite of the privations caused by drought and grasshoppers. But he moved to Valley County, Nebraska in 1882 and lived there until his death.

The Hackels spent the first winter in Valley County in a dugout north of their later home. He was naturalized in Valley County, Nebraska 16 March 1892. He shot himself on the Missouri, Kansas & Texas passenger train en route just before reaching Vinita, Indian Territory, while on a group excursion to Port Lavaca, Texas. The Ord Quiz contains the particulars of the sad story. His remains were returned to Ord on 10 March 1893, and he was buried in the Mira Valley Cemetery, then later moved to the Ord Cemetery.

H says he moved to US in 1871 and that he died in Texas while on a trip. OA85 says he was shot on a train. VNEP says he died in Venita, Indian Territory, while on a train trip.

Anna came to the US aboard the Herder (Hapag line), departing from Hamburg and Havre and landing in New York 5 July 1882 with her son Emil. They first went to Wisconsin where some of her other children lived, namely Andrew and Helena. They made their home near Norwalk (La Crosse) Wisconsin. In 1890 she and Emil moved to Nebraska. Her daughter, Helena Foth Schwarz and family, and son Gustav George Foth also moved to Nebraska at this time. Helena's son, Ed Schwartz, told of riding with his Uncle Emil with the cattle in a stock car to their destination. Anna Zabel Foth and son Emil lived west of North Loup, Nebraska, then moved to a farm where Will Foth later lived south of Ord - farther west of North Loup - and just south of the Valleyside school. Her house was later moved to the farm of Dale Mulligan, west of North Loup, Nebraska, where it is still occupied. She was buried in Mira Valley, but later removed to Ord Cemetery in 1951.
