82nd Ohio Volunteer Infantry

Researchers will find these rosters useful in determining on any given date, the available strength of each Company. Please keep in mind, it is estimated

that on average 20-50% of a company’s strength was either absent, sick, on furlough or other detached service. Many would become stragglers on extended

marches.  A company was sometimes divided into two platoons, one headed by the Captain and the other by the 1/Lt, with one of them possibly detached as a group.

Morning reports for this Regiment have not been located and each soldier’s status on any given date cannot be determined.

At Gettysburg, 312 men went into battle according to the after action report of Lt/Col David Thomson dated Aug 21, 1863.  All ten companies participated

in the battle as determined from the casualties.  So, by using these rosters, on paper 684 men should have been available when in actuality only 45.6% of

that number was reported on the field.  According to an account 20 years later, in July 1883, by Captain Alfred E. Lee, of Co. E, 82nd OVI, the men were

mustered on the battlefield while under fire to determine the number present.  He reported 22 Officers and 236 men [258] present on the field [ 37.7%] at

Gettysburg; of which only 3 Officers and 89 men were available to bring the colors off the field at the end of the first day.  The remainder was killed,

wounded or missing in action.

This group of rosters will also be an aid to those doing genealogy research.  But, one should obtain the service record of your family member from the

National Archives to ascertain when they were actually mustered as "present".  I have tried to be as diligent as possible, but inevitably errors and omissions

will be found.  I accept responsibility and request to be notified when they are found so that appropriate corrections can be made.  Each roster begins on

Jan 25, 1862, the date the Regiment marched out of Camp Kenton, Ohio and boarded the train for Virginia.  I have considered the soldiers listed on that date as

original members.
