Generation One

1. John1 Herring; born circa 1755; married Hollen Ragan 30 May 1795 at Oglethorpe, Georgia; died circa Jun 1823 at Morgan, Georgia.

He appeared on the census of 1800 at Capt Hudspeths District, Oglethorpe County, GA, According to the census, John Herring was recorded with 1 male age 10 to 16, 1 male age 16 to 26, and 1 male 26 to 45 (probably John). Also recorded were 5 females ages under 10, 1 female age 10 to 16, and 1 female age 26 to 45 (probably Hollen).1  John Herring drew in the 1804 Land Lottery of Georgia while living in Oglethorpe County, GA on 3 Feb 1804 at Oglethorpe County, GA.2   Hollin Herring, (Morgan County) wife of John Herring, drew in the 1827 land lottery of Georgia as the widow of a revolutionary soldier. See page 187 of source in 1827 at Morgan County, Georgia.3

2. David2 Herring (John1); married Elizabeth Vines 12 Dec 1809 at Oglethorpe Co, Georgia; died circa 1870 at Walton Co, Georgia.

David appeared on the 1860 Census for Walton County Georgia as age 74, and born in South Carolina. He was enumerated with his wife Elizabeth, age 57.4 He left a will on 15 May 1869 at Walton County, GA.5

Edy2 Herring (John1); born circa 1800 at Oglethorpe Co, Georgia; married Seaborn Jones 4 May 1818 at Oglethorpe Co, Georgia, It is unknown at this time as to what happened in the marriage between Seaborn Jones. No annullment or divorce record has been located, nor a death record of Seaborn Jones; Edy married William Crawley 26 Jun 1823 at Georgia.

There were no children of Edy2 Herring and Seaborn Jones.

8. Hezekiah2 Herring (John1); born 12 Apr 1806 at Oglethorpe Co, Georgia; married Samuel Patton, son of Solomon Patton, 4 Aug 1821 at Oglethorpe Co, Georgia; died 29 Mar 1862 at Campbell Co., Georgia, at age 55.

Children of Hezekiah2 Herring and Samuel Patton were as follows:

9. Jesse Marion2 Herring (John1); born circa 1804 at Georgia; married Sarah Upshaw, daughter of Forrester Upshaw and Ann Faulkner, 24 Jan 1824 at Morgan, Georgia;6 died before 1860 at Georgia.

He and Sarah Upshaw lived in in 1828 at at Moreland, Coweta County, GA.7 He was shown in the 1830 Census of Coweta County, GA as "Jesse Herrin" with 2 males under the age of 5, 1 male between the age of 20-30, and 1 female between the age of 20-30.8

Children of Jesse Marion2 Herring and Sarah Upshaw were as follows:

Martha2 Herring (John1); born 17 Oct 1810 at Oglethorpe Co, Georgia;9 married Adkins Upshaw 9 Sep 1824 at Morgan Co, Georgia; died 5 Aug 1860 at Coweta Co, Georgia, at age 49; Source record indicates Martha Herring Upshaw, wife of Adkin Upshaw, is buried in an unknown named Primitive Baptist Cemetery in Coweta County, Georgia.10

11. John3 Herring (David2, John1); married Martha Williams 7 Dec 1833 at Walton Co., Georgia; married Jane Johns 6 Dec 1836 at Walton Co., Georgia; married Emily Upshaw 10 Jun 1869 at Walton Co., Georgia.

John appeared on the 1860 Walton County Georgia census as age 53, born in Georgia, and was enumerated along with his wife, Jane age 43, son John age 21, daughter Martha age 19, daughter Susan age 14, son James age 12, son Thomas age 9, son Charles age 8, daughter Mary age 6, and daughter Eliza age 4 months.11

There were no children of John3 Herring and Martha Williams.

He appeared on the census of 6 Sep 1860 at Newnan, Coweta County, GA; At the time of the 1860 census for Coweta County, GA, Haston was living next to William Upshaw, his wife Sarah, and his son Claud Upshaw.12

David Henry3 Herring (Jesse2, John1); born 27 Mar 1833 at Coweta, Georgia; married first Millard (Millie) Jones, 27 December 1860, in Newnan, Coweta County, Georgia;  married Elizabeth Ann Pearson, daughter of William Marion Pearson and Martha Carr, circa 1875; died 26 Dec 1910 at Hokes Bluff, Etowah, Alabama, at age 77.

He served in the Civil War, enlisting 1 May 1862, Co. A, (Captain Hanvey's) 12th Battalion, Georgia Volunteers (this company subsequently became 2nd Company A, 12th Battalion, Georgia Light Artillery) . Captured by General Sheridan's forces at Strausberg, Virginia, 23 September 1864, Battle of Fisher's Hill. Sent to Harper's Ferry, West Virginia, and then sent to Point Lookout, Maryland, September 30, 1864.

He and Elizabeth Ann Pearson appeared on the census of 26 Jun 1900 at Precinct 19, Reaves, Etowah County, AL.15   No Civil War pension application has been located.16

24. Sarah F.3 Herring (Jesse2, John1); born circa 1837 at Newnan, Coweta Co, Georgia; married John E. Jordan 2 Dec 1860 at Coweta Co, Georgia.

25. Jesse Marion3 Herring Jr. (Jesse2, John1); born 24 Jul 1844 at Newnan, Coweta Co, Georgia; married Rispah Duncan 8 Aug 1867 at Coweta Co, Georgia; died 29 Dec 1894 at age 50.

He appeared on the census of 21 Jun 1880 at 6th District, Newnan, Coweta County, GA.33
