"The first time I came across the descendants of the four brothers was from Sue Holden's " The Burchetts Of Eastern Kentucky ". I have strived to find out more about these four brothers-- Benjamin, Drury, Thomas and Armstead. My research has brought much excitement and grief. Not to mention the enormous amount of information about the ancestors of the four brothers.
It all started with a man who came to America from England to have a new life in the new world. His name is Edward Burchett. He came to America in the year 1665. All the Burchetts in America descends from this Burchett.
There were others before him but they decided to go back to England.
In those times, it was very hard to survive in America. Food was a shortage problem, the King would persecute the new arrivals. The King would only give land to the Noble Families. While others would have to work to have a piece for themselves or have money between them.
Many migrated to America to seek refuge from the King but found out it was harder to live in America than England. One Burchett decided to stay.
Edward was born in Chatham, Kent County, England 1640. Three years after his marriage to Mary ?, born 1644, in 1662 he came to America. He had two sons and a daughter born in America eight years after his arrival in 1665. Edward died in 1715 Charles City, Virginia. Charles City Became a county in the year of 1623/24.
In one family bible I came across, it said Edward died in Prince County. There were three Prince Countys in Virginia: Prince Edward 1754, Prince George 1703, Prince William 1731. Edward died in 1715. Prince George became a county in 1703. It couldn't be possible. Prince George was formed by dividing Charles County (One of the original shires of 1623/24 ). Robert Burchett was the first Burchett to be born in America in 1673. He was born in Charles City, Virginia. Robert married Hannah Hedford about 1693. Prince George became a county in the year of 1703 prior before his death in 1735 in Brunswick County, Virginia.
The other Burchetts to be born in America was William Burchett born 1680, Elizabeth Burchett born 1675.
William's wife is unknown at this time. Elizabeth married Robert Lundy. Elzabeth was born in Charles City. The known child of this union was a daughter named Burchett Lundy. William was also born in Charles City. There were records of William in Meherrin Parish, Brunswick County, Virginia. Brunswick was formed 1720 from Isle of Wight (one of the original shires of 1623/24 that later changed it's name ) and Prince George County and Surry. Surry was formed in 1652 from James City (one of the original shires of 1623/24 ). Isle of Wight was called Warrosquyoake (one of the original shires of 1623/24 ). Warrosquyoake later change it's name to Isle of Wight in 1647.\par I found records of a Rebecca Burchett (born 1702 in Charles City, Virginia ) in Brunswick County, Virginia. Rebecca married a William Lee.
There was an Drury Burchett born 1722 in Brunswick County, who married Elizabeth Thweatt in the same area. I found a marriage record of a Elizabeth Thweatt and a Drury Burchett. They were married 1749. In the Thweatt family bible, it states Edward Burchett Jr. was Drury Burchett. Edward Drury Burchett Jr. The records only states his name was Drury. Drury had a brother named Edward Jr.. Edward was a witness to Elizabeth's father's will. At this point I still couldn't connect with the first Burchett to America. If Edward Burchett was a Jr., then his father had to be an Edward also. But the Edward who came to America would of been 82 years old when Edward Drury Burchett Jr. was born in 1720. Since there is no record of an Edward Drury. It has been discounted. There has to be an Edward Burchett born about 1700. If William and Edward Burchett Jr. was in the same place, then they have to be a connection somewhere with another Edward.
I came across a land record in Charles City dating March 15, 1673. An Edward Burchett owned 351 acres and 32 poles. He had adjoining land with James Thweatt. Elizabeth Thweatt's grandfather. Drury Burchett probably met Elizabeth Thweatt there. The only conclusion I could come up with was William had a son named Edward Burchett Sr. His wife is unknown at this time.
William had a son named Robert Burchett born in the same place. His birthday is unknown but Robert died between Feb. 3, 1759- May 13, 1760. I found a will naming his children and wife as sole heirs to his estate.
Edward Burchett Jr. was a witness to this document. Robert Burchett was not his father. If he was, Edward would have been mentioned.
I assume Robert was an uncle to Edward Jr.. If Robert was born about 1700. He would have been 60 years old or older when he died.
Drury Burchett and Elizabeth had four known children : Drury Burchett, Elizabeth Burchett, Susannah Burchett, and William Burchett.
I came across the Setzer family bible stating the four brother's father-- Drury Burchett born 1750 in Brunswick County, Virginia.
I have been in touch with many professional researchers through out this book. I asked their opinions on matters and they agreed on many points I just made.
I also have been in touch with each of the four brother's descendants.
Through out this book, you will find much of the information in order of there contents.
Many of the Burchett names were spelled Birchett and Burchett. But in the wills of these people who had their name spelled Birchett was corrected in bars with the correct name. People often spelled the Burchett name the way it sounded. There were some Virginians whose name were Birch. Confusing the name and spelling the name Burchett to Birchett. With the name Birch, you will find this name within this family bible.
Edward Burchett was born in England. He came to the new world in 1665. It is not known if he had children in England before his first child, Robert who was born in America.

Edward Burchett owned land in Charles City County, Virginia.
March 15, 1673, showed Edward with 351 acres and 32 poles on the South side of Appomattox River; adjoining land of Henry Batt and James Thweatt.
On October 31, 1673, showed Edward owned 551 acres of land in Charles City County, Virginia.

Benjamin was shown in the tax lists from 1748 - 1783.
In 1764, 1765 - Benjamin claimed 1 tithe and 200 acres in Lunenburg County
In 1772 Beniamin claimed his son Robert in Lunenburg County tax records where he claimed 2 tithe.
In 1773, 1774, 1775 Benjamin claimed his William in Lunenburg County tax records where he claimed 2 tithe.
In 1776 Benjamin claimed 2 sons in Lunenburg County- Benjamin Jr. and William.
Benjamin bought a grist mill and 35 acres from Valentine Brown in 1759. 1761, Benjamin sold the mill and the property to Travis Mason.
On August 7, 1761 Benjamin patented 400 acres on the south branches of the Meherrin River in Virginia.
In 1764 Benjamin sold part of the land of 1761.
In 1764-1765 showed he was listed as owning 200 acres.
At a court held in Lunenburg County on June 13, 1782 to hear public claims. Benjamin claimed 1 rifle gun was owed to him.
Benjamin patented land in Lunenburg County to his son Young Burchett.

Benjamin recorded his will in Lunenburg County of February 8, 1787 on February 14, 1788 the will named William and Young Burchett and other unnamed children. William and John Burchett, along with William Scott were named the will's executors. The witness were George Clark, Samuel Estes and Henry Pollard.

"The mother of Thomas, Drew, Flem, Armstead, and Benjamin Burchett died and their father (name unknown) remarried. They did not consider that they were fairly treated by their step-mother and the older children (under the leadership of Tom, the oldest,) decided to leave. The four boys set out without Benjamin who was only a baby. After they went some distance, Tom stopped them and announced that they would go back and get Bennie and take him with them. They stopped in Floyd County and took shelter in a slave cabin belonging to Jimmy Layne. They stayed there until they were discovered by Layne and were moved by him to his home or perhaps to a nearby house. Two weeks from the time they were moved, a huge rock came out of the mountain and came to rest where the shack had stood. Since this occurred in the middle of the night, it seems obvious that the Burchett generation in eastern Kentucky would never come into being but for the benevolence of Jimmy Layne."
