Jeanne,
Thanks for the fwd from Bill Wagner.
My mother: Ruth Myrtle [DENNIS] Cooper said that the Dennis family were Scotch/Irish. If this is true, I have found some interesting information that may pin-point the date/time in which the Dennis family came to America.
Following a nine year war and five years of no harvest in Northern Ireland [or ULSTER\}, a ship named: "SULLY" departed Northern Ireland for Philadelphia. The Ocean voyage at that time took 2 to 3 weeks (normal) but it took the Sully 3 and a half months, arriving September 2nd 1714.
The Scotch/Irish settled 40-50 miles west of Philadelphia in what was called "DONEGAL". Today, Lancaster County has a township called Donegal.
I believe You will find the Dennis family and perhaps one of them named John from about 1714 up, in that area, or in eastern Maryland. All for now Carl Cooper...

I have John Dennis married to Elizabeth Buckley. This John was born about 1744 in Fairfax, VA.
For the next John, born 13 Feb 1770 in VA, he married Elizabeth Harrison born 9 Dec 1769 in Dumfries, VA. I don't have any siblings listed. That doesn't mean there were none.
John and Elizabeth Harrison Dennis had 10 children, do you need them? and yes my ancestor was their son, John Clinton Dennis who married Rachel Conover. I could send a GEDCOM if you like.

Subject: Re: Dennis info. 1-3 Generations

I mailed you a paper copy of my reseach, I thought it contained information about the second generation along with the sources. I never heard if you recieved it or not. All information about John Dennis being the father of the boys listed in generation one is from the Virginia Personal Tax lists before 1800 which are as far as I know only found in the Balch Library in Leesburg and maybe the Virginia State Library in Richmond.
What kind of geneaology program do you use? Is it Family Tree Maker? If so which version do you have? I have version 7.0 but can export to the ones before. Any version before 6.0 will not except my whole file as it is too large. I can split it off and send only the Dennis part which is my husband's line as my line would be of no interest to you. I don't think the GEDCOM version will show any sources.
I am still working in the land deeds section in Loudoun Co. and working in the Belmont Co. Records as Absalom Dennis was living in Belmont co. by 1828. I assumed that he arrived in that year. It appears that he is the Abraham Dennis that is listed in the 1830 census of Belmont Co. as according to the tax list there was only one Dennis living there and it was Absalom. I have not learned as yet who he came to Ohio with and where he lived except that it was in Kirkwood twp. as he did not own any land. According to the deed index Alexander purchased some land and I have begun to order the Deed Books to see what I can get from this.
I do have some clues from the Deed books in Loudoun Co. as to where the Dennis group came from and where to look for our dead John. This has been done by studing their neighbors and friends. John Dennis Jr. had leased some land belonging to the Carter family for three lives. His leased land was on the south side of Goose Creek and was partly in Loudoun Co. and partly in Fauquier co. I learned this from reading the lease agreement of his neighbor. When William and Thomas bought their land it was on the north side of Goose Creek and I believe it was land they had leased before they were able to purchase it. The same tracts belonging to Tom and Will were described as being the land that Bryan Fairfax inherited from his father and leased to various individuals. When Fairfax sold this land to Josiah Watson the leased people were not to be disturbed from their land. When Watson sold the land to George Balyly the leases were still in force. Then he died and the land was divided among his sons who decided to sell to people who had leases if they wanted to buy. Both Tom and Will added small potions to their purchase of Balyly by buying land from the Barrs who lived next door. It appears that Tom lived in George Barr's old house and Will lived in the house built by George Bayly or Pierce his son.All the Dennis land tracts were described as being on the waters of Goose Creek. This land was also along the road that led from Middleton to Handy's Mill.

Hi Jeanne,
Very sorry to hear that you have been sick for so long. That can really get you down. I do hope you are feeling better.
Sorry I was so long getting back to you. I really got backed up on unanswered mail. Any how....... I will give you a run down of my family branch as far back as I have it. Some of this information I collected when I went down to Loudoun County, VA last summer. I made two trips, 5 days each trip. I got quite a bit of information.
John Dennis Sr. b abt 1744 in Fairfax Co. VA - wife Elizabeth Buckley b abt 1748
Son of John Dennis: Absolum Dennis b. 5 Jun 1791 Loudoun Co, VA d. 19 May 1877 Monroe Co., OH
Absolum first married Mary Ann Wilson (1796-1846) m. 21 Dec 1811 Loudoun Co., VA. Second married Jane Lockhard (abt 1815-1879) m. 13 Jul 1848 Monroe Co., OH.
Son of Absolum and Mary Ann Wilson:
Joseph Thomas Dennis b. 27 Jan 1825 Loudoun Co., VA d. 17 Feb 1910 Gracey, Washington Co., OH He is buried in the Dennis Family Cemetery, Gracey, OH. Joseph married Hester Ann Johnson (1831-1899) m. abt 1848.

John Henry Dennis b. 10 Dec 1864 Monroe Co., OH d. 25 May 1934 Washington Co., OH.
John first married Martha E. McKitrick (abt1865- ) m. 4 Oct 1884. No children by this marriage. I don't know what happened to Martha. My Father told me that John went to MO in late 1800's. It is there that he met his second wife.
John second married Bertha Hoggett (1879-1902) m. bef 1900.
John and Bertha had one child Winnie Belle:
Winnie Belle Dennis b. 17 Sep 1900 Spring Grove, MO d. Jun 1968 Marietta, OH

Winnie and Albert had 3 children

2. Betty b. 1927 now living in CA
3. Paul b. 1930 now living in Medina, OH
John third married Ethel Algreta Smith Fleming b. 25 Jun 1881 Washington Co., OH d. 25 Nov 1916 Washington Co., OH m. 5 May 1903. Ethel was a widow when she met John. Ethel had one child from a previous marriage. Her name was Grace Winfred Fleming b. 1 Jul 1901 Washington Co., OH d. Jan 1982 in Huntington, WV. Grace never married.
Son of John and Ethel:
Wilbert Austin Dennis b. 15 Jan 1908 Washington Co., OH d. 19 May 1997 Beverly, OH. Wilbert married Gladys McCauley (1912-1999) m. 27 Oct 1934
Wilbert and Gladys are my parents. The had 4 children, me being the oldest. I was born 19 Oct 1935 Cow Run, Washington Co., OH. I was born in the house that John Henry Dennis built. Many of John and Ethel's children were born in the same house. That house and farm is still in the Dennis Family.
While in VA last summer, my wife and I had the opportunity to visit an old home stead called "Lilac Hill". It is about 1 mile north of Middleburg, VA. on Sam Fred Road. This home was once own by William and Thomas Dennis. Sons of John Sr. William, Thomas, John Sr. and Absolum were all living in the same house for a while. Lilac Hill is on the Virginia Historic Register. It was built in the late 1700's and is still standing today. It is built of stone and stucco. Built to last. It is now part of a 2000 acre estate. We met with the people who are living there now. They were very nice people. They let me take photos of the outside of the home. One other note, Absolum and his wife Mary Ann, moved from Loudoun County, VA to Belmont County, OH in 1829.
I hope the above information is of some help. If you have any questions, I will be glad to answer them if I can.
Take care of your self, Stay well.

DENNIS- AT Mt. Gilead, Loudoun Co. ,Va., Jan. 16th, 1890, John W. Dennis, aged 53 years and 3 months.
In the death of this man, Mt. Gilead has lost a good citizen, and a high-toned Christian gentleman. He was a great sufferer for the last five years, with lung and kidney disease, which he bore with Christian fortitude. He was a member of the Northfork Baptist Church, and died in full hope of eternal rest. He leaves a beloved wife, who, through, his long illness gave him her undivided attention and care. She is like Job of old- all has been swept away, but she is patient. May the God of her husband be her God, and preserve her in her declining years.
There is conflicting information as to the Samuel Rusk family. I took the name Margaret Dennis from her father's will as he named her so must have known her complete name but the census has her listed as Marisa and Marissa. Her grave marker has her as Marizie Rusk but I am fairly sure it is the same person. One of their daughters is buried in the family plot as are several of the children from Samuel Tillett's first marriage. Margaret is age 55 in the 1850 census but 50 in the 1860 census!!! I believe her grave marker to be the most logical. Samuel's age is in agreement with his marker. Also Violinda H. Rusk is listed in the census as Vilinda both in 1850 and 1860.p. 237 #1084

Susan C. Rusk 6/6/1834 12/19/1880

Also Louisa Dennis is found as Laura Dennis in some newspaper articles but as Louisa in her marriage record, as Louisa on her daughter's grave and in some court records so I think she was probably Louisa.
Another thing I have run across is a deed in Prince William Co. dated August 26, 1740 for a farm let for life from French Mason of Truro Parrish, Prince William Co. to Benjamin Grayson Sr. of Hamilton Parrish Prince William Co. and his two sons, Benjamin Grayson, Jr. and Spence Grayson. It includes Fifty acres and an old mill and a one acre site opposite to the old Mill Dam. They are to pay with 530 pounds of tobacco on the first day of March each year but not to begin until march 1742. They also have the right to fish. The witnesses are John Dennis, Benjamin Rush, John Bronaugh I am now wondering if our John Dennis, senior was a lot older than we think. He might have been born in abb. 1720 instead of 1744. This would make him around 56 at the time of the American Rev. which would explain why he didn't fight. You only had to be 16 to be a witness on court documents. Just about everyone he hung around with was from Westmoreland Co. or Northumberland Co.

Subject: Belmont Co. Ohio letter

To those who I have not written to in some time, I purchased a letter on ebay written by Washington W. Dennis home to his father William A. Dennis in Loudoun Co., Virginia. The letter was sold by man in Virginia who purchased the letter from a stamp dealer in northern Virginia. I can't tell everyone how thrilling it was to hold that old letter in my hand!

Notice the spelling of Absalom and it is the same as the spelling on the deeds Absalom signed in Loudoun Co.

From the letter I realize that Callendar S. Dennis and Olivia Jane Dennis had not been born yet. Since this was written April 22, 1838 William A. must have been the oldest son of Washington and his birth year on his tombstone must be incorrect. The tombstone says September 18, 1838 but he was clearly alive before that time. The census must be consulted again as I had assumed that Callendar S. was the one born abt. 1833. Virgina Catherine must have been born abt. 1837. This needs to be looked at further.

The letter is written on very thin paper and every scrap of room is filled. The margins are filled also. The notes in the margin seem to be after thoughts. Washington's handwriting is small but very readable. He spells things as they sound and uses the "f" as the old double ss. There is not a character on the computer key board that I can use to show how this letter looks. He also does not use periods at the end of sentences. I will type the letter just as it appears- spelling and all. I will make copies of the letter and send to those who want a copy. I intend to donate the letter to the Library of Virginia in Richmond as they wanted it. They stopped bidding on it so that I could purchase it and then donate it to them. They will preserve it forever.

Dear Father and Mother

We received your kind letter of the 25 of January Some time in Febuary and we was glad to hear from you and to hear you was all alive and tolerable well, We are all well at this time and I hope when this letter comes to hand it may find you all well and being well I have delayed writing to you on the account that we expected to have seen Brother Marcus here before this time and also Cousin Lewis and Sister Olivia as you rote to me they ware on there way to the Illinois and Missouri if thay are gone from your house to the new country they have not stopped to see us but we are still looking for them on here yet but I rather expect they are gon on past here if they intend going this spring I should like to see you all very well. We expected to have been there to see you by this time but I have been disappointed in getting money for my land I have sold it for one hundred and sixty five dollars in silver or gold and it to be payed by the first of this month so the man could not get the money according to promise and so I still kept the place And I expect to stay here this year and then I shall sell and come and see you all once more and bring my family with me I have been very busy this winter I have taught three months School this winter I had twenty schollars since though there was forty schollars came to me and some if she pay I never expect to get atall (end of page 1)

My school was out the first of this month and ever since I have been very hard at work so my hands are so sore and stiff that I can scesely write atal I have been clearing land for to plant in to Tobacco I suppose tobacco will fetch a tollerable good price next fall I will give you a short history about Harper and Hoge how they have managed (?) they business to work me out the fifty dollars I was to have had It appears that Harper never pushed Hoge for the money according to my directions and Hoge got the news he was judged by me and Harper making no push what does Hoge do but come to our house and pumped (?) round me in a very distant manner to know what I knew of the sircumstances so I knew his meaning and gave him no satisfaction on the subject (This was on Christmas eve Hoge was here.) and early next morning he started from here and went to Harper and told him that he had bought him some money that one of the women had found the day he mooved by there and he would have brought it home sooner but the woman that found the money had refused to give the money to him to bring home to him untill then and for his part he pursuaded her often to give the money up but she all ways refused untill just then and he had brought ninety dollars of the money home out of pure good will and he would give his note for the ballance of the money which he sayed she had used about forty fore dollars was used, and I and the most of the people is of the opinion Hoge is the person that made use of it. (End of page 2)

Harper refused to pay me one cent for my trouble and information he says I have no rite to one cent of the money for Hoge bought the money home of his own accord that he never never proceeded according to my directions and therefore I have no rite to ask any thing for what I done and there is no use of going to law with him as he has money and I have none for cases are generally decided in favors of them that has the largest purse I have not near room enough to explain the hole matter it would take three sheets of paper to explain the hole subject to you I want you to form your own opinion of this subject as it can be better conceived than explained by me on so small a piece of paper I will tell you all about the crooks and turns of the rascals on both sides for I conside Harper just as mien as Hoge if he does not satisfy me for my trouble You wrote someting about my coming back you I rather expect to reap any benefit as to wealth from my return all the benefit I shall expect to reap is that blessing I so long for of conversing with my Parence Brother and Sisters if you was all out here I shood be much better satisfyed with this county than I am at this time We are here like lost birds far from our relations and for no cause but poverty for it is not wealth that keeps me here, The price of wheat has been $1.00 per Bushel but now 62 cents n corn from 40 to 50 cents oats 3 cents We have had a very cold and backwards spring here and on Easter sunday we had a heavy fall of snow and for several days after snow continued to fall and we have had several freezes since then (end of page 3. On both sides of the folded letter from the front page continues:)

There has been a great deel of fuss about the money business in this county and they will take no money in the land office except Gold or silver and you may tell Brother Marcus he need not bring any other sort of money to enter land with except Treasurey notes and them he can get at the City of Washington and they are ? handier than the spetia?

I have a great deal more to write but I have not room to tell you all I want to tell you You will please to write to me with out delay when you get this letter we are very sorry to hear of your afflection with the fever last fall but that we have all to ? with I must come to close as my paper is getting scarse You must direct your letter to the same place as before We remain your affectionate children

William A. Dennis ) Washington W. Dennis

Kitty Dennis ) Frances M. Dennis

(In the margin of page 2) We have heard from Uncle Absalom and family lately and they are all tolerably well at this time there has been several of his family here this winter and Sarah and Abraham Forshey his Son in law I have been at Uncle's myself this winter

(In the margin of page 3) I wish to tell Cousin Lewis that it is my advice to him to come and see the western County before he brings his family to it because if he does not like the country when he sees if he can easly return to them again in his old settlement

Another note to those of you I have not talked with in some time: The letter A that appears as the middle intials for so many of the Dennis line appears to be for Anderson. Thomas Anderson Dennis Jr. , the son of Thomas A. Dennis Sr. used the name Anderson Dennis since he was a junior it is assumed that the senior had the exact same name. Also the complete name of Absalom Dennis's son was Alexander Anderson Dennis. My thinking is that the wife of Old John Dennis must have been an Anderson. I continue to seach for the answers.

Marcus Dennis, son of William A. Dennis,Sr. died before 1840. I am 95% certain that he was the husband of Matilde Dennis, daughter of Thomas A. Dennis,Sr., and the father of Sophoronia and Mary Jane. Marcus and Matilde Dennis were both born abt. 1807 and were first cousins.
