The Maryland Set of the
Odell / Odle / Odall Family
Possible Origins of the name:
The Surname of Odell seems to originate with Woad-hill. Woad was
a plant that was used in the making of blue dye from at least the
Saxon times. The beginnings of the family seems to center around
areas of Northern Bedfordshire, Southern Northamptonshire,
eastern Buckinghamshire, or Northeastern Oxfordshire in the
United Kingdom. There is also a possible connection to the
village of Odell in Bedfordshire, England
Other Spellings of the Surname:
Due to differences in pronounciation of vowels by the different
families and the fact that many probably couldn't write or had
never seen their names written down in the earlier times, there
are many different ways that the Odell family spelled their
surname:
Odell, O'Dell, Odle, Odall, Woodalls, Wodhulls, Woodhill,
Waddell, Wadel, Weddells, Dowdalls, and Udalls being only a few.
In the Maryland section of the Odell family the most often used
spellings were: Odell, O'Dell, Odle, and Odall.
Early Immigrants
Some Early Odell known immigrants were Reginald Odell (who was a resident of Boston, Massachusetts in 1687), and William Odell (who came to Concord, Massachusetts in or around 1639 and then moved to South Hampton, Long Island, New York about 1642 until he settled again in Fairfield, Connecticut). It is unknown at this time any connection between the two mentioned above and my line that starts with Henry Thomas Odell or between the two individuals themselves.
Traveling Buddies:
The Maryland section of the family seemed to travel with the
following families:
Duckett,
Prather,
Beall
Reports:
Descendant Report of Henry Thomas Odell and Sarah Ridgely
Descendant Report of Joshua Odle and Susannah Davis
(Joshua Odle is supposed to be connected to Henry Thomas Odell, but definate proof of connection to Joshua's father by LDS, William, has yet to be proven).
Possible Connected Odell's (unknown connection)
