The Family of Benjamin F. Robinson

The Family of Benjamin F. Robinson

1. Benjamin F. Robinson was born 30 January 1823 in Ohio Co., Virginia (3A) or 30 January 1827 in Ohio Co., Virginia (3A: mentions Charlotte's family bible), and died 15 May 1900 in Odaville, Jackson Co., West Virginia (3A). He married Charlotte T. Conant on 8 March 1846 in Amesville, Athens Co., Ohio (1: Batch M513071, 5), a daughter of Jeremiah Conant and Abigail Muncy. She was born 20 February 1827 in Broadwells, Athens Co., Ohio (3A: mentions Death Certificate), and died 30 December 1919 in Cox Valley, Logan Co., Arkansas (3A).

Notes on Benjamin F. Robinson and Charlotte T. Conant:

Benjamin was born in Ohio County West Virginia. He was educated and knew how to read and write extremely well. He was a craftsman with his hands. He made doors for his home, as well he carved "The Benjamin Robinson Family Monument" which he placed and still stands in the center of the cemetery he started in his front yard on top of a ridge, off Sarvis Fork Rd, in Odaville, Jackson County, West Virginia.

Who were his parents? His mother and father were both born in Virginia. His father was of Irish descent. Their names, are still yet unknown. We hope as records are continuously becoming more readily available, and family genealogy becoming a rapidly growing hobby, that someday we will have these answers.

Benjamin served in the Ohio Volunteer Infantry. He enlisted on October 1861, for three years. He was placed in the Thirty-Sixth regiment, Company F, as a private, serving as his regiments bugle blower. During his service he was wounded and captured at Chickamauga, Georgia. Then parolled and exchanged in May 1863. Benjamin was certified with a disability for discharge from Nashville, Tennessee on May 22, 1863 by Brigadier General James J. Morgan. From his discharge record, it appears that Benjamin was first interviewed on May 14, 1863 and at that time was listed that he had been unfit for duty for the previous 60 days. Benjamin did not stay down long. He again returned to fight the Confederates and was wounded and captured during the Battle at Winchester. He again was paroled and exchanged on July 24, 1864. Finally the Civil War nears an end, and our Benjamin is officially discharged on December 15, 1864. Charlotte Robinson was listed as his beneficiary in Pension Records.

Benjamin, for unknown reasons, decided to relocate to Oklahoma with his son Daniel. Prior to leaving West Virginia however he did write his Last Will and Testament. Which proved necessary as he died in Clayton, Pushmataha Co., Oklahoma and was buried there.

Witnessed by: Basil Kelbaugh, Laura Kelbaugh

Laura Kelbaugh was the daughter of Basil and Mary B. (Matheny) Kelbaugh. On April 19, 1900, between the time of the Will being witnessed and Benjamin's death, Laura Kelbaugh married Nelson Granville Conant. Nelson was the son of Sanford Benjamin Conant Jr., the nephew of Charlotte T. (Conant) Robinson.

The property which Benjamin left as his legacy was inherited by Daniel Galveston Robinson. Daniel returned to Odaville West Virginia, prior to Benjamin's death to care for him and Charlotte, and to take care of the farm as directed. Daniel still preferring Oklahoma, made arrangements for his mother, Charlotte, to move to Arkansas to live with and assist his oldest brother Jeremiah. Jeremiah had recently lost his wife and was left a widower with two young sons to care for. Daniel left the family property in the care of his niece, Gertrude "Girtie" Robinson Parsons. Gertrude remained in the family home many years, providing shelter, safety, and many happy memories for the family. Today the home is gone. It had to be torn down due to age. However the property remain and is under the care of Edward Howard Dillion, Elem and Velma (Morgan) Dillions son. The cemetery is showing wear, but is mowed and cared for by descendants of William Robinson. How proud Benjamin was of what he had accomplished in his life and had to leave his descendants. Besides teaching his children how to select, care for and live off their land, keep to themselves and mind their own business, he also passed along his woodworking skills to his sons Daniel and Jeremiah.

William lived the last years of his life with his son Harrison, 4 miles back of New Haven, Mason County, West Virginia. Emma his grandaughter remembers him as a kind, gentle man. She relays her memories of his last days, that he was sick and in bed. Unaware of his exact ailment. William had wanted to go outside. He made it across the room, falling down across the fireplace hearth.
He was buried in the Robinson Family Cemetery where he lived before his marriage, also where he raised his children, prior to removing to Mason County. (Check Jackson Co., WV website.)
