Welcome to the family genealogical site dedicated to the descendants of GEORGE WASHINGTON GUNTER.
The family of George Washington Gunter and wife Elizabeth Shelton moved from Halifax Co. VA to Patrick County, VA in about 1819 and settled in the part of Patrick County, Virginia now called Five Forks, just north of the Stokes County, North Carolina Line.
George Washington Gunter, born about 1784 and died about 1839, was probably the son of John Gunter who died intestate in Halifax Co., VA about 1788. John Gunter's widow, Sarah, married James Boyd in June 1789. Elizabeth Shelton, born abt 1785 and died abt 1861, and George W. Gunter were married on February 10, 1802 in Halifax Co., VA by Rev. Leonard Baker. She was the daughter of Josiah Shelton and his wife Elizabeth.
George and Elizabeth Gunter had eight children: William, John Henry, Ruben, Beverly, Housen, Sandy, Elizabeth & Sarah.
William died before his father and had two children. Not much is known about this family.
John Henry married Elizabeth Jane "Eliza Jane" Leake.They had the following children: Joseph Henry, George Beverly, Elizabeth, John William (my husband's line), Mary, Shelton, Gustavous, and Susan.
Ruben married Martha Ann Leake. They had the following children: David Columbus, Juriah Ann, William Wade, Peter Jackson, Susan V., Joseph Lafayette, Sarah E., James Marion, Nancy A., and Martha F.
Elizabeth married Peter Jackson Leake (Eliza Jane's brother). They had the following children: Susan Elizabeth, Nancy Jane, James Austin, Mary Ann, Loretta, Sereptia Frances, John H, Lucinda A., Peter Jackson Jr, Jeanette, William Walter, and Ruth Victoria.
Sandy married Aufelda. They had the following children: George Washington, James M., Sarah Ann, and Richard L.
Sarah Ann married Jesse T. Simmons ( his first wife was Seripta Sally Leake - sister of Peter Jackson and Eliza Jane). Sarah Ann and Jesse had the following children: Bell, George A., Jesse T., Noah S., Beverly Thomas, Elizabeth Augusta, David Johnson, Milly, Kelly B., and Harriet.
Beverly L. married first Mary E. Joyce and after her death married Elizabeth "Betty" Frances Joyce Pringle. Beverly and Mary had the following children: George W., Nancy Hamilton, Thomas J., Mary E. "Lizzie" and Harriett C. Mary died while her husband was away fighting in the Civil War. Beverly and Betty had the following children: William R., Abraham Lincoln, Andrew Jackson, Mary Ida, Minor Lou, Susan E., Minnie Ada, Benjamin J., and Ernest Early.
Housen married Elizabeth Fry. They had the folowing children: Fannie, William A. Alfred Zachariah, Mahalia, Benjamin, George Washington, Elizabeth, and Hariett.
Descendants of many of these families still live in the Patrick County Virginia and Stokes County NC area. Several of John H. Gunter's children moved with their father to Pulaski County after the Civil War and then later some moved to Giles Co., VA others moved to the Spanishburg WV area or to Raleigh County WV.
