Christ Church, Stannington
Church of England officials had
pushed for some time to build a church at Stannington, and Christ Church was
consecrated by the Archbishop of York on 20th July 1830. Voluntary subscription
had purchased the site and the church was built under the Million Act costing
a little under £3,000, the money coming from the million fund and a substantial
donation from the Misses Harrison of Weston Park. The building is in the Gothic
style with a low bell tower and the seating for a thousand people was in three
balconies and pews that stretched from the rear wall to within two feet of the
pulpit.
