CROWN & GLOVE, Uppergate Road, Stannington.
Popularly known as "The Top House." According to the Deeds
the Crown & Glove was at one time a cottage in a row of four serving ale.
It was then known as the Tontine - a name given to houses where the owners
have each subscribed to the capital required for the purchase, the last surviving
inheriting. From 1842 it was known as the Crown & Glove and passed from the
ownership of Bradley & Co. to S. H. Ward brewery in 1876. On 16th June 1919
retired "Sheffield City Police" Inspector Harry Thrale moved to Stannington
to become landlord of the Crown & Glove and in 1921-22 he set up business
as "H. Thrale & Co." with his Red Motor Bus Service between Stannington, Malin
Bridge and Bradfield.
