ROSE & CROWN, Bankfield Lane, Stannington.
Known as "Minnie's." The structure of the old Rose & Crown would have indicated that it was built for a private residence but there are no records available to confirm this or to say when the sale of beer first took place. However, it was a free house up to June 1918. Up to that date the owners for a considerable number of years were the WILD family and they sold out to Tomlinson's Anchor Brewery. During the year 1920 Mr. & Mrs. Irvine LEE took over the tenancy and after Mr. Lee died in 1953, Mrs. Minnie LEE carried on as tenant for a number of years until just before the building was altered. Mrs. LEE could claim nearly a lifetime's connection with the Rose & Crown as she can remember as a girl standing on a box to wash glasses whilst the WILD's were tenants.
