Bard St, Park
Originally called High Street until 1872 when it was changed
to Bard Street to avoid confusion with the High Street in the centre of town.
The name "Bard" is a mystery. It may be related to Shakespeare,
who is probably the best known of Bards.
(top) Looking down from Bernard Street at
what was once Bard Street . In 1990 Bard St was renamed Blackwell Close. To
the left where the red car stands was School Street and to the right was Old
Street. In 1990 both streets were renamed to form Blackwell Place.
(below) Taken from the footpath shown in the top photo. This footpath was
once the continuation of Bard Street which ran all the down to Broad Street.
The lower part of what is still named
Bard St can just be made out between the trees on the left.
