Sheffield local newspapers are available on film in the local studies library.
Here is a brief summary of the main Sheffield papers. The names which changed over time and were often unreasonably long have been simplified :
SHEFFIELD REGISTER 1787-1794 (weekly)
which became
SHEFFIELD IRIS 1794-1848, 1855-1856 (weekly)
SHEFFIELD MERCURY 1806-1848 (weekly)
SHEFFIELD INDEPENDENT 1819-1938 (weekly, daily from 1861)
SHEFFIELD TELEGRAPH 1853-1980's (daily)
THE STAR 1887-date (daily)
These above are the main newspapers. There were many other local newspapers and periodicals, which may have been short-lived or covered a restricted area.
Note: the 'Sheffield Register' above is not the same as the yearly news digest of the same name which was published by the Sheffield Independent. The latter can be useful for pinpointing major events. There is also a manuscript index to it (for the 19th century) which can be useful once you have mastered the almost impenetrable handwriting.
Obituaries are never very common in these newspapers at any period.
For wills from 1858 it would be better to look in the comprehensive probate indexes which are available in many archives, and also (I think) from the LDS. They list all wills and administrations in the country (England and Wales ?!), in yearly series of indexes. Anything you find can be purchased quite cheaply.
