SHREWSBURY HOSPITAL.

This establishment was founded in 1616, by Gilbert, Earl of Shrewsbury, but was not completed until 1672. The original hospital stood on the ground now occupied by the wholesale vegetable and fruit market, and was superseded in 1827 by a superior structure erected in Norfolk-road, Park. It is a handsome building, with pleasure grounds and shrubberies. Further improvements are now in course of being carried out. New drainage has been laid down. A commodious bedroom is being built to each house, which will then consist of sitting room. bedroom, kitchen and pantry, and all conveniences, adding much to the comfort of the inmates. The patronage of the hospital is vested in the Duke of Norfolk. There is accommodation for 20 poor men and 20 poor women, with an allowance Of 14S. a week to each of the former, and In 10/6 to each of the latter. They have also a load of coals each every three months, and a certain allowance of clothing. There are, in addition, 60 out-pensioners. who have each a weekly allowance Of 7s. The recipients, in accordance with the will of the founder, are selected from a class that have seen better days, but are reduced by misfortune, preference being given to those who have been tenants of the Duke of Norfolk. The Rev. Alfred T. Coore, M.A., is governor and chaplain.
