Hello, my name is Donald Engstrom and I am married to Carolyn Lyons. This website is about our ancestors and their families. I have had an interest in genealogy since a teenager and have done genealogy off and on since that time.
When I was in school, I really enjoyed history. Many of my classmates said that they didn't like history because it was only memorizing a lot of dates. This made me feel bad because I enjoyed learning about how others lived and the problems they faced. The dates only gave order to the events that have been deemed important in history and that have caused changes in the world. Signifcant events like the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Wars, inventions, etc. are associated with people who are well known and we know about their lives and deeds. They are called famous because of their association with these significant events and their influence on them. I have been fascinated with the men and women who have made a difference in history and especially those who have outstanding character.
Family history has many of these same characteristics with one big exception. Although many think that genealogy is only recording names and dates, family history deals with those that are close to us in relationship. Most have little association with significant historical events unless they were in the military, were government officials, inventors, etc. Most are people who are our progenitors or we are related to them through marriages, etc. Their names, dates, and places are important to identify them and to place them in context of other historical events. But what is important to an amateur genealogist, is the effect that these people have had on who we are, where we live, what we are and what we may become.
This website is an attempt to bring the personal lives of Don and Carolyn's ancestors to our posterity and to others who might be interested in their histories. Included are their photographs, documents, and personal histories written by themselves if available and by others as well. The documents included are vital record documents (birth, marriage and death), church documents (baptism, ordinations, etc.), and other documents such as school diplomas, awards, etc. Also included is a link to their genealogical data on WorldConnect.
The vital documents are provided to show the source for birth, marriage, and death dates in the genealogical data in WorldConnect. The document is shown along with an extraction of the data. Extracted information preprinted on the document is shown in normal 'Black' type while the personal data entered on the document is shown in 'Fuchsia'. When the document is in a foreign language, 'Black' and 'Fuchsia' are used for the foreign language. 'Blue' and 'Red' are used for the English translation. 'Green' is used for notes to explain errors found, to clarify what is being extracted, and for general comments.
