Egypt

Egypt is another great place, although I didn't find having the jabs much fun! A place with a great deal of history (!) and it definitely makes you wonder how they built those pyramids.

Cairo is totally different to Luxor and I would recommend visiting both places. The hotel that we stayed in Cairo was not as splendid as the one in Luxor (Luxor Hotel on the banks of the River Nile) and the occasional cockroach just seemed part of the experience!! Luckily we were on the banks of the Nile so that made up for the bugs.

The trip to the pyramids was excellent, you see them on tv and it is not until you get right up close that you realise how enormous they are, we also went on a horse ride around the area galloping in the sand with the pyramids nearby was just great. Don't forget the camel experience, it is a much different ride and getting off is relatively easy!! We also took a trip to a date farm, wandered around the sphinx, took a trip to Alexandria where we had a meal at a fish restaurant overlooking the harbour.

A great sight was at the Cairo museum where Tutankahum's death mask was able to be viewed. Another must see is the famous Khan el-Khalili souk, other places include: Memphis, Sakkara, the Cairo Tower, Mohammed Ali’s Mosque.

Luxor was just as fantastic and the hotel was situated on the banks of the River Nile. We had several trips that we mainly did on our own and we took a trip up the Nile to Denderra (arriving at midday so it was extremely hot!). A trip to the Valley of Kings and Queens is a must, although coming out of the tombs to the cooler air was pretty strange! I think it was about 47 degrees the day we took that trip. Visits to the Karnak Temple should be done early or in the evening, as it does get hot walking around.

There is so much to write about Egypt that I would recommend you take a trip to the following sites:

Egyptology.com is a website by Greg Reeder. Greg has tons of info and it is worthwhile have a read through his website and do take a look at the photographs that have been taken of the sites and art.

If you fancy reading the "Book of the Dead" it has been translated and you can read it by clicking on the link over on the left.
