About the Calendar Change

In one of the parish records, a clerk wrote to explain the change of the calendar, and local people's reactions to it:

"Up to 1752, the year began on 25 March, but in that year the 1st of January was adopted as the first day...In the same year, the Gregorian Calendar replaced the old Julian Calendar, which was 11 days behind the true date.  So, in September of that year, 11 days were left out of the month."

"Many ignorant people thought that they would die 11 days sooner, and riots ensued with the crowds shouting, "Give us back our eleven days!"
