Note: John enlisted June 9, 1861 at Fort Smith, AR in Company H, 
1st Regiment, Arkansas Mounted Rifles, C.S.A. He served as a 
blacksmith and wagoner and was paroled at Greensboro, North Carolina, 
April 1865.
After the War, John moved from Arkansas to Texas. His wife, Selina, had died and
he had married Mary Frances Cowling and was living in Pilot Point, 
Denton Co, Texas at the time of the Federal Census of 1870 and 
1880. The family moved to Wise Co, Texas in 1884. John and his brother, 
William Newton Spencer, were nurserymen and sold fruit trees and 
grapevine cuttings.
