Velma Viola Hancock Symonds Shaw (1914-2004)

This is my aunt Velma, she is the granddaughter of Easter Paralee Eddings Hollis and Robert Jessie Hollis, Jr. and the grt grt granddaughter of John and Elizabeth Weaver Eddings and daughter of William Rgile and Mary Catherine Hollis Hancock. She was a great lady and fun to be around.

Velma Viola Symonds, 89, died May 23, 2004 at Catholic Care Center, Wichita. She was born August 9, 1914 at Tahlequah, OK, the daughter of William R. & Mary C. Hollis Hancock. A longtime Hutchinson resident, she worked for Cessna. She had attended Pentacostal Holiness Church in Hutchinson. She was a member of the Ladies Auxillary of the VFW.

In 1931, she married Claude F. Shaw in Oklahoma. He died in 1971. In 1951 she married Jack D. Symonds at Bentonville, Arkansas. He died in January of 1970.

Survivors include two sons, Larry & Terry Symonds, Topeka; five daughters, Mary Hodge, Bonnie Morton, both of Hutchinson; Shirley Crook, Wichita, Gale Frazer, Moundridge, Pamela Raines, Plano, TX; 24 grandchildren and numerous great and great-great grandchilren. She was preceded in death by a granddaughter, Kelli Jo; four brothers, Ira, Clem, Toy, and Roy Hancock and seven sisters, Lilly Roberts, Lular Burchett Andrews, Mamie Geasland Hilton, Edith Bell, Eddith Karr Smith, Rosa Cook Bruce and Tennie Slape Alexander.

Funeral service will be Thursday, 5/27/2004 at 10:00 AM at Johnson & Sons Funeral Home & Crematory Chapel with Wayne Pittman presiding. Private Committal will take place at a later date. Visitation will be Wednesday 1 PM to 9PM.

Memorial contributions may be made to the VFW in care of the funeral home.
