Death of David J. Brooks

David J. Brooks, probably the olds resident of Craig, was called to his heavenly home Wednesday afternoon January 7.  While he had not been in good health for the past nine years, he was only taken to his bed about two weeks ago.  Death was due to general debility.

David J. Brooks was born in Ohio county, Kentucky, October 5, 1844.  When he was twelve years old, he moved with his parents to Holt county, Missouri, and here he has spent the greater part of his life, having lived only a few years in Richardson county, Nebraska and in the state of Oklahoma.  Mr. Brooks was only a boy when the Civil War was declared, and at the age of 19 he joined the Union army and served in Company C of the 9th Missouri Cavalry under Captain Patterson, until he was honorably discharged, May 18 1865, at St Louis, because of ill health.

He then returned home and was united in marriage to Miss Adelia McCready of Craig on September 6th, 1874.  To this union ten children were born, four dying in  infancy, and two sons, Jay and William E., passed away in 1918.  He leaves to mourn their loss a wife, four children, Mrs. John Garrett, Mrs. W. T. Redmon, and Lizzie and Emmett, at home, ten grandchildren, two brothers, George W. Brooks of Fairfax, and James Brooks of Arnett, Okla., and one sister, Mrs. H.R. Walkup of Fairfax.

Mr. Brooks was up until two years ago a member of the G.A.R.  He did not belong to any lodges and never affiliated himself with any church, but lived a life of  a Christian every day in the deeds of kindness to his neighbors, friends, and to his family.  He has lived many years, done many good deeds, and has made the way happy for his loved ones and he shall receive his reward in Heaven.

The vacant place, the empty chair.  We see them day by day;
As Oh, it fills our hearts with care,
Since our loved one went away.

Funeral services will be held Saturday afternoon at 2 o'clock at the Methodist church with Rev. H. R. Tate officiating.  The Story-Hardin Post of the American Legion will have charge of the services at the cemetery.

Mrs. Margaret C. Brooks was born March 29th, 1822, in Ohio county, Kentucky.

Died January 1, 1912, near Fairfax, Missouri. Aged 89 years, l0 months, and 1 day.

            She was married to Thomas Brooks on December 23 1839, and with her husband she came from Kentucky in 1857 and settled in Holt county, Missouri.

To this union were born 10 children, five of whom survive to mourn her absence. The husband departed this life March 3rd, 1896.

            She professed faith in Christ at 17 years of age and united with the Baptist church, from which time she has lived a consistent christian to the day of her death.

            Her last days were days of feebleness, during which time she was tenderly cared fro at the home of, and by a loving son and his kind and loving wife with all the love and care that loving children could bestow on a mother so beloved.

            "The righteous shall flourish like the palm tree:  he shall grow like a cedar in Lebanon.  Those that be planted in the house of the Lord is upright.  He is my rock, and there is no unrighteousness in Him."  Psalms 92: 12 15.

            "Thou shalt come to thy grave in a full age; like as a shock of corn cometh in his season," Job 5:26.

            The funeral was conducted by Rev. J. H. Weaver, assisted by Rev. J.T. Puckett at Walkup's Grove Baptist church and the remains were laid away in the adjoining cemetery to rest until the resurrection.
