Creek Freedmen Roll 1867 by Given Name
After emancipation many ex-slaves chose different surnames which has
lead to the difficult task of locating ancestors. It is also known that
children were named in a systematic order, much like the; THE
OLD JONES NAMING PATTERN: The first son is named after the father's
father the second son is named after the mother's father the third son is named
after the father himself. The fourth through the last son is named after a favorite
brother or friend (usually of the fathers). The first daughter is named after
the mother's mother. The second daughter is named after the father's mother. The
third daughter is named after the mother herself and the fourth through the last
daughter is named after a favorite sister or friend (usually of the mothers).
It is therefore helpful to view given names which may assist you in identifing
ancestors with unknown surnames, thus I post the Dunn Roll in alphabetical order
by Given Name. (Scanned Images of the original record)
