To assist you in locating which tribe(s) to begin your search, I have complied this index of Freedmen Surnames. The Index list the Surname in the first column and the second through the sixth column list the Tribes (Indian Nations) were they were enrolled. Many surnames include more than one Nation, however, there are a small number that can be found in all nations.  Again this index is only a starting point, do not limit your search to just the Nation(s) listed.
