A Little History

MUSCOGEE (CREEK) NATION
1895 Maps of Indian Nations

The Muscogee (Creek) Nation, one of Oklahomas Five Civilized Tribes, was so named by the English because of the large number of watercourses in its country.During early times, they occupied most of Alabama and Georgia, living along the Coosa and Tallapoosa Rivers and along the Flint and Chattahoochee Rivers. When discovered by DeSoto in 1540, they had already formed the Creek Confederacy to resist attack from powerful northern tribes; and the were successful.

Between 2836 and 1840, approximately 20,000 Muscogee (Creek) were removed to Oklahoma, where they established their seat of government at Okmulgee, consisting of a principal chief, judicial department, and legislature.Improverished first by the removal and later by the Civil War, their resourcefulness is evidenced by the swiftness with which they recovered from disaster and prospered.

Today there are four main groups of Muscogee (Creek) in Oklahoma-the Creek Nation, the Alabama-Quassarte (Coushatta), the Kialegee, and the Thlopthlocco Creek, each with a tribal council and all of whom form todys Creek Confederacy, with its seat of government still at Okmulgee in eastern Oklahoma.
