A Little HistoryThe Peoria Tribe formerly belonged to the group of Algonquian Tribes forming the Illinois Confederacy. Unpon Marquettes return from his expedition down the Mississippi in 1673, he found the Peoria living near what is now Peoria, Illinois. During the general removal of the eastern Indiansto West in 1832, the Peoria, together with remnant of the Kaskaskia (once a leading tribe of the Illinois Confederacy), emigrated to a new reservation assigned to them on the Osage River, Kansas. In 1854, the two tribes were joined by the Wea and Piankshaw, two bands of the Miami, and in 1857-58, these united tribes moved to the Quapaw Reservation in Oklahoma. The Act of August 2, 1956-Public Law 84-921- terminated Federal supervision over the property of the Peoria Tribe. This act was repealed by the Act of May 15, 1978, which restored the Peoria as a federally recognized tribe. |
