Texas Slave Narrative

  Carolina Houston

Aunt Carolina Houston was born in Macon, Georgia, in 1856. Her Master was Bicar Evans . I remember but very little of my earlier childhood which were spent before the Yankee came, but when the Yankees did come to get us my Master got all us nine darkies and run. I was eight years old at the time and could do any duties my would assign me to and if I do say so my Master never had to fuss because I didn't hitch up his ho'ses right. One time one of Marster's neighbors ask how old I was and Master said eight so the other man said why she can beat that gal of mine hitching a tem and she's twelve. Well we first went to Nacoches, Lousiana, but the Yankees were still coming and we came on here to Nacogdoches Texas. Marster got all us a place to stay here. He got me a job at the Hart Hotel. That night I heard more crying and next day Master and Mistress were gone and left me here myself, if I could have found them I'd have left Hart's next day and followed them but I was scared to death. Lawd hone one crying free, free, but I never did learn what they I was hired next to Mr. Montes , but one day an old friend came for me and I went with him. This man was Master Robert Gillikin   Ever since them I have belonged to the Gillikin heirs,  died he made provision for me to be taken care of, but while on the County farm and them with some niggers  me the White Folks niggar but I didn't care cause white folks made us what we are. One day my young Mistress who I am staying with now, came to see me, I cryed and begged her to take me back with her and I aint lived with the darkies since. When asked if she married,  Yes, but I didn't stay with him I went back to Master Gillikin . Yes, I went to church, to the white folks church. Mr. Parks , baptised me. Master Gillikin let us have parties. Course this was after every one thought they were free. I'd dance all night and work all next day and I didn't get sleepy either. Wish I could dance now like I did then. White people had dances and the darkies played the fiddles. Aunt Carolina married George Houston after she was twenty years of age but never lived with him but a week. She went back to her white mistress. Said that she wasn't going to live with no niggar. I wore home spun aprons most of the time and I did anything my mistress and master told me to do. I eat peas, possum, rabbit and bread. We had a cook that cooked what we ate. When we were sick mistress always come around and said, better hurry and get up gonna be more grass than we can ever git rid of. Lay chile, I never played a game in all my life. Never had time to play. My master lived in a large log building covered with boards. We had small cottages to sleep or live in. Just one room to our houses. We ate and slept in the same room. No I had no relatives, just some more of the darkies lived with me. I can't remember of the other darkies names except Emma . Emma was older and larger than me but she didn't do near the work that I did. She was one of the darkies that was left here at Nacogdoches with me. We never earned any money when we were slaves. Our master and mistress bought all that we ever needed. I never had a pair of shoes until after the other niggars were all freed, or they said they were freed. Some of the slaves run away but none of masters ever cause he was too good to them. I saw one jail that was use jail run-a-way darkies. Most masters whipped them or put the pattyroll after them and then the colored folks would be so to run any more.
